A Soviet Soyuz spacecraft is at upper right. The opposing Cold War ideologies of the USSR and the USA competed to achieve milestones in space exploration. The Soviets were the first to put a human in orbit, but the USA were first to land humans on the Moon (upper centre). Both put space stations in orbit (Salyut, Skylab, Mir) and then (as Russia and the USA) worked together on the International Space Station (ISS). |
