LON144671 Singapore. Bronze sculptures on the bank of the Singapore River. In the early days, many trading houses and financial businesses were set up along the Singapore River. The Bank of Calcutta was the first bank to be established here, in 1840. The Chettiars from South India were successful in their moneylending business, while the Chinese working in the clearing houses made full use of their capabilities in the thriving trade between Singapore and China. An interesting aspect of this sculpture is the inclusion of a lady stock trader in a modern dress. Appearing to be engaged in a business deal with the depiction of the early Chettiar and Chinese, sculptor Chern Lian Shan shows the transformation of the commercial area around Raffles Place and the Singapore River from the past to the present times. In the background is another bronze by sculptor Malcolm Koh of the scene at the Singapore River when it was a busy trading port. It was a common sight to see European traders making deals with Chinese towkays, while Chinese pigtailed coolies and turban-wearing South Indian coolies loaded and unloaded goods at the harbour. The towkay would measure the weight of the goods by a traditional weighing scale called the daching, and proceed in his negotiation with the traders from all around the world. 2012

alb3652962 Venus and Cupid. Artist: Antonio Canova (Italian, Possagno 1757-1822 Venice). Culture: Italian. Dimensions: Overall: 10 1/4 x 19 11/16 x 7 1/16 in. (26 x 50 x 17.9 cm.). Date: 1798-99.This group is more closely related to Canova's painting than to his sculpture. Escaping from the "fearful effects of the Revolution" that were then afflicting Rome (Canova 1994, p. 310), he spent much of the years 1797-98 with his family in Possagno, there taking time out to paint several of the canvases that were a delightful sideline of his. They include a half-length squarish picture of Venus and Cupid (fig. 34; Pavanello 1976, p. 138, no. D23, ill.). Although her legs are cut off, Venus is posed on a couch, embracing her son who returns her hug, and gazes directly at the witness of this tender momeny, more or less as here. Softly brushed, the paintings have the look of Pompeian frescoes with accents from his beloved Titian. The present model, which I presume precedes the painting, is rather larger and perhaps a bit more ponderously studied than usual for Canova. Admittedly his clay models are generally handled more loosely, but they do offer abundant precedents for the choppy play of the modeling tool over flesh and cloth, the sluggish rhythms of Venus's long limbs, and her huge feet. These traits occur strikingly in the studies leading up to Cupid and Pysche (cat. no. 10) and in models for the Penitent Magdalen (cat. no. 8 and fig. 25) and one for Charity. This last has the same preliminary relationship to a painting as the present work, only babies have been added to the canvas, which is signed and dated "A. Canova Sc. 1799" (Pavanello 1976, pp. 104, 138, nos. 111, D27, ill.).In all fairness, it must be said that Hugh Honour and Giuseppe Pavanello are unconvinced by the Canova attribution (letter from Honour to James Draper, October 6, 1993). We resubmit the case in the interest of opening up the question--adding only that we know as yet no imitator of his modeling style capable of incorporating so instinctively such personal Canova tics as the curved slumped back, looping limbs, and long feet. The slightly reddish buff clay, with firing cracks visible especially underneath, hsa been extensively touched up with plaster additions painted to match the terracotta in the areas of the front left corner of the bed, the mattress, the foot of the bed with paint extending over Venus's proper left foot, and Cupid's wings. Venus's hair is overpainted, possibly covering damages there.[James David Draper 2003]. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: early 1460s.This is an important early work by Giovanni Bellini, the greatest painter of fifteenth-century Venice and one of the key figures of European painting. Datable to the mid-1460s, its hard, linear quality is indebted to the example of Bellini's brother-in-law, Andrea Mantegna, as well as to the sculpture of Donatello, which Bellini studied in Padua. The sleeping child is a reminder of Christ's death and sacrifice. The picture has suffered from a strong, abrasive cleaning. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Dimensions: 25 x 30 in. (63.5 x 76.2 cm). Date: ca. 1514-15.This panel once formed the left wing of an altarpiece dedicated to Saint John the Baptist that was commissioned by abbot Jacques Coëne for the Benedictine Abbey Church in Marchiennes, near Tournai. It depicts Saint Elizabeth in bed, shortly after giving birth to the newborn saint. Zacharias appears at the entrance to her room, carrying a scroll which declares his son's name will be John. The pendant (in a private collection) shows the moment after the Baptist's death, when Salome receives his head on a platter. The centerpiece of the triptych, likely a sculpture of the Baptism of Christ, has not survived. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Bernard Van Orley.

alb3602299 The Way They Live. Artist: Thomas Anshutz (American, Newport, Kentucky 1851-1912 Fort Washington, Pennsylvania). Dimensions: 24 x 17 in. (61 x 43.2 cm). Date: 1879.During the 1870s, American Realists such as Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins occasionally depicted African Americans engaged in their daily activities. Here, Anshutz portrayed a woman and two children caring for their vegetable garden. The rural setting appears pleasant, but the figures' poses and facial expressions seem to project despair, even anger. Although the composition is ambitious, the treatment of anatomy--especially the woman's elongated arm--suggests that Anshutz, then studying with Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, still had much to learn. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Thomas Anshutz.

alb3614866 Two Girls on a Lawn. Artist: John Singer Sargent (American, Florence 1856-1925 London). Dimensions: 21 1/8 x 25 1/4 in. (53.7 x 64.1 cm). Date: ca. 1889.Sargent probably painted this canvas at Fladbury Rectory, an old house he rented in Worcestershire, England, where he was joined by his mother, his sisters, Emily and Violet, and other guests. "V & Katie Vickers" is inscribed in an unknown hand on the tacking edge of the canvas. "V" presumably refers to Violet, wearing a black dress because her father, Dr. FitzWilliam Sargent, had recently died. The woman in the white frock cannot be identified; no Katie Vickers is known in the Sargents' circle. In any case, the artist was concerned not with capturing individual likenesses but with creating a daring two-dimensional pattern in black, white, and green. alb3640908 Madonna of Giverny. Artist: Frederick William MacMonnies (American, New York 1863-1937 New York). Dimensions: 45 3/4 x 45 3/8 in. (115.1 x 114.7 cm). Date: 1901.MacMonnies created this autumnal-themed work during the four-year period (1900-1904) when he redirected his attention from sculpture to painting. Reimagining the Virgin and Child in a French grape arbor, he posed his son Ronald as the Christ Child. The models for the angels were the artist's daughters, as well as two children of the gardener of his Giverny neighbor, Claude Monet. The circular format, called a tondo, and the naturalistic setting reflect the influence of Italian Renaissance artist Raphael, whose paintings of the Madonna MacMonnies copied in Munich's Alte Pinakothek. alb3667180 Painting the Eyes on a Snow Rabbit. Artist: Isoda Koryusai (Japanese, 1735-ca. 1790). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: Image: 23 3/4 in. × 16 in. (60.3 × 40.6 cm)Overall with mounting: 62 1/4 in. × 23 in. (158.1 × 58.4 cm)Overall with knobs: 62 1/4 × 24 3/4 in. (158.1 × 62.9 cm). Date: ca. 1780.During the Edo period, as a winter amusement, children often made snow sculptures and the two most popular types were the snow rabbit (yuki usagi) and the snow Daruma (yuki Daruma). This image transports a children's outdoor pastime into an elegant interior setting where a woman, probably the boy's mother, paints on the eyes of a snow rabbit he holds on a lacquer tray. The seated woman wears an obi decorated with chrysanthemum flowers, while the standing younger woman has a kimono with summer hydrangeas--a reminder that people often wore garments with unseasonal references to distract from frigid or humid weather. Instead of using berries to fashion the eyes of the snow rabbit, they are being painted on as if it were a Daruma figure, on which one eye is painted when setting a goal or making a wish. alb3610956 Statuette of Isis and Horus. Dimensions: H. 17 cm (6 11/16 in); W. 5.1 cm (2 in.); D. 7.7 cm (3 1/16 in.). Date: 332-30 B.C..For the ancient Egyptians the image of the goddess Isis suckling her son Horus was a powerful symbol of rebirth that was carried into the Ptolemaic period and later transferred to Rome, where the cult of the goddess was established. This piece of faience sculpture joins the tradition of pharaonic Egypt with the artistic style of the Ptolemaic period. On the goddess's head is the throne hieroglyph that represents her name. She also wears a vulture head-covering reserved for queens and goddesses. Following ancient conventions for indicating childhood, Horus is naked and wears a single lock of hair on the right side of his head. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3680398 Jungle Tales (Contes de la Jungle). Artist: James Jebusa Shannon (1862-1923). Dimensions: 34 1/4 x 44 3/4 in. (87 x 113.7 cm). Date: 1895.Shannon studied in London during the 1880s and remained there, enjoying success as a society portraitist and figure painter. (In 1922 he renounced his United States citizenship in order to accept a knighthood.) "Jungle Tales" portrays the artist's wife reading to their daughter, Kitty, shown in profile, and another child. The painting's title and date and its London origin suggest that the little group is captivated by Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book, which had appeared in 1894. The intensely realistic faces contrast with the decorative patterns of the dottedmuslin and lace costumes and the elaborate design on the brilliant blue backdrop. alb3671547 Mrs. Charles Willson Peale (Rachel Brewer) and Baby Eleanor. Artist: Charles Willson Peale (American, Chester, Maryland 1741-1827 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). Dimensions: 2 1/2 x 2 in. (6.5 x 5.2 cm). Date: 1790.In 1771, Peale painted a large portrait (whereabouts unknown) of his wife, Rachel (1744-1790), with their third child, Eleanor (1770-1773), to celebrate the child's first year of life. Their first two children had died in infancy. At the time, the artist wrote to his friend Edmond Jenings, "I have a fond Wife and Child and more coming, which my success in the Art I hope will enable me to provide for." Twenty years later, after Rachel's death, Peale copied the portrait in small format as a token of his affection for her. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: 1777-80.Peale portrayed Mrs. Mifflin, born Rebecca Edgell, in the act of instructing her granddaughter in virtue and morals from an emblem book. The atmosphere of affectionate serenity with which the well-knit group is imbued probably indicates that Mrs. Mifflin was a contented, pleasant matron and a good mother to her three children. It also reflects Peale's own love for family life and his reverence for domestic happiness. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Charles Willson Peale.

alb3619356 Madonna and Child with Seraphim and Cherubim. Artist: Andrea Mantegna (Italian, Isola di Carturo 1430/31-1506 Mantua). Dimensions: Arched top, 17 3/8 x 11 1/4 in. (44.1 x 28.6 cm). Date: ca. 1454.The composition of this touching image, which may date to about 1454, is inspired by the sculpture of Donatello, who worked at Padua between 1443 and 1453. Its emotional intensity is compromised by abrasion to the paint surface (the face of the Virgin is almost obliterated). Only the cherubim on the right are well preserved. The illusionism of the arched setting is typical of Mantegna's desire to break through the picture plane and invade the space of the viewer. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
