alb3670150 Portrait of Pietro Aretino. Artist: Marcantonio Raimondi (Italian, Argini (?) ca. 1480-before 1534 Bologna (?)); After (?) Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90?-1576 Venice). Dimensions: Sheet: 8 3/8 × 5 7/8 in. (21.3 × 15 cm). Date: ca. 1517-20.Often regarded as the first modern pornographer, the poet and satirist Pietro Aretino (1492-1556) penned some of the most lurid and salacious verses of the sixteenth century, most famously the sixteen sonnets he wrote to accompany Giulio Romano's I modi and the erotic dialogues featuring a worldly-wise puttana (prostitute) Nanna conversing in explicit and lively detail about endless and infinitely varied sexual adventures--her own and those of innumerable others that she surreptitiously witnessed.Marcantonio Raimondi's engraved portrait of Aretino was probably designed by the Venetian painter Sebastiano del Piombo, although the name of Giulio Romano--with whom Marcantonio collaborated on I modi--has also been proposed. It may date from the early moment of his career, when Aretino was still an unknown newcomer to Rome and he and Giulio were working for the wealthy papal banker Agostino Chigi; an alternative view is that the print was executed about 1525 as an expression of gratitude by Marcantonio to Aretino, who had negotiated the engraver's release from prison after the scandal of I modi.Aretino's dignified mien and elegant costume impart to him the refined aspect of Renaissance courtier. That facade is belied by his conspicuous hat badge--an invocation of the satirist's transgressive, obscene pronouncement that the phallus should be venerated and displayed as proudly "as a medal in one's hat.". Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3679706 The Finding of Moses. Artist: Jacopo Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti) (Italian, Venice 1518/19-1594 Venice). Dimensions: 30 1/2 x 52 3/4 in. (77.5 x 134 cm).The biblical story of the Finding of Moses was popular in Venice. Tintoretto gives it an unusual twist by showing Pharaoh's daughter watching as a nurse is found for the baby (actually his own mother), rather than the more typical discovery in the bulrushes. The meaning of the hunting scenes in the background remains mysterious. The proportions of the figures and the painting's sketchy quality have led some critics to suggest that it might be by Jacopo's son, Domenico. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3626282 Standing and Seated Figures in a Landscape with an Obelisk. Artist: Battista Pittoni (Italian, Vicenza ca. 1520-ca. 1583 Venice (?)). Dimensions: 8 3/8 x 7 1/4in. (21.3 x 18.4cm). Date: 1520-83.The drawing was listed by A.E. Popham as a work of an anonymous Venetian draftsman of the Sixteenth Century in the John B. Skippe collection catalogue of 1958 (Christie's, November 20-21, 1958, lot. 263B). The attribution was corrected to 'Circle of Nicolò dell'Abate' by Harry G. Sperling, who acquired the drawing during the Skippe sale and eventually donated the sheet to the Metropolitan Museum in 1975 (a hand-written annotation with this attribution remains on Sperling's own copy of the Skippe's catalogue in the Department of Drawings and Prints, MMA). Françoise Viatte in January of 1980 (written correspondance to Jacob Bean) recognized this drawing as a characteristic example of the work of Giovanni Battista Pittoni, a Veronese specialist in fantastic landscapes with Roman ruins. Pittoni's sprightly personality as a draughtsman has been defined in relation to his documented prints, and indeed drawings in the Witt Collection, London, the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, and the collection of Emile Wolf, New York, are preparatory studies for engraved landscapes. Alessandro Ballarin supplied a brief summary of Pittoni's work as a draughman in his article published on "Arte Veneta" (vol. 25,1971, pp. 104-05). (F.R.). alb3601378 Venus and Adonis. Artist: Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90?-1576 Venice). Dimensions: 42 x 52 1/2 in. (106.7 x 133.4 cm). Date: 1560s.Tales from Ovid's Metamorphoses inspired Titian to paint what he called poesie, or poetry in paint. Here, Venus tries to stop her lover from departing for the hunt, fearing--correctly--that he would be killed. The mood of sensuality, conveyed by the beautiful depiction of Venus from the back, enhances the viewer's sense of the tragic end to this story, expressed through their exchanged glances and the frightened Cupid. Titian's workshop made multiple versions of this composition, but this one is of exceptional quality and was painted by Titian himself. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
