902_05_12513297highres The Sheldonian Theatre, located in Oxford, England, was built from 1664 to 1669 after a design by Christopher Wren for the University of Oxford. The building is named after Gilbert Sheldon, chancellor of the University at the time and the project's main financial backer. It is used for music concerts, lectures and University ceremonies, but not for drama until 2015 when the Christ Church Dramatic Society staged a production of The Crucible. There are thirteen square pillars topped by head-and-shoulder busts marking the front boundary of the Sheldonian and erected when it was built in 1662-8. When the Old Ashmolean (now the Museum of the History of Science) was built next door in 1679-83, another four matching heads were carved to go in front of that; Oxford, England

902_05_12513278highres Magic lantern slide circa 1900.Victorian/Edwardian social history. A postcard of Queenstown, New Zealand by famous photographer Frederick George Radcliffe (F.G.R Postcards) The notable British born photographer, Frederick George Radcliffe is widely recognised in New Zealand as one of the pre-eminent photographers of his time. Radcliffe traveled the length and breadth of this country recording clear, detailed pictorial images of rural and urban New Zealand scenes. Much of his subject matter consisted of aesthetically pleasing views of parks and gardens, municipal buildings, churches and all manor of community infrastructure. Curiously, with the exception of an array of maori subjects a great many of his images were completely devoid of the presence of people.

902_05_12516050highres Magic lantern slide circa 1900.Victorian.Social History.No. 1.?Algiers from the Harbour. Of all towns op the Mediterranean between Tunis and Tangiers there is none so calculated to enchant the traveller upon a first view as Algiers, both on account of the beauty of its surroundings and the unfamiliar and striking configuration of the city, which appears to be rising in dazzling radiance from the sea itself. It is difficult to conceive anything more alluring, more fantastically beautiful, than such a view. At the base of the town we see the quays, and a portion of the long line of Boulevards, built by Sir Morton Feto; in the centre we see a little spot of green, the clusters of palms and bamboos in the Place du Gouvernement; above rises, tier upon tier, the flat-roofed houses, dominated by the still massive citadel, the Casbah [B]. On our left we see one of the fine fleet of steamers which ply between Marseilles and Algiers.

The esplanade at Mentone is of considerable length, stretching from the west hay on one side of the town to the east on the other, and it is here that daily walk both the invalids who are sojourning at Mentone for the mildness of the air, and the healthy visitors who are simply there with a view to enjoying themselves. Persons who do not care for the excitement and dissipation of Nice flock here in large numbers, and as the surrounding country offers most beautiful excursions, and pleasant society is to be met with in the hotels, it is not strange that so large a quantity of travellers should spend their winters there.

Sorrento presents to the traveller who gazes upon it for the first time the ideal Italian seaside resort. Situated amongst the most lovely groves of oranges and lemon trees, and with precipitous hills rising behind it, whilst, at the bottom of the. cliffs on which it is placed, the Mediternaples, ranean lies, it would be difficult to name any spot that more appeals to the sense of beauty. It is the fashion now for people who are tired of the noise and heat of Naples to frequent Sorrento, and here, either in the charming little villas which1it contains or in its excellent hotels, to find that rest and tranquility which it would be impossible to obtain in the great city near it. In the winter it is crowded with tourists of all nations, and even in the summer the sea breezes render it sufficiently cool to be inhabitable with ease. Capodimonte is a small suburb of the small spot, and it was here that Tasso lived.

902_05_12513165highres Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. Titled Cities and places of interest in the Mediterranean.31.?THE BAY OP NAPLES AND VESUVIUS. The volcanic mountain of Vesuvius is the great attraction of the traveller who does not go to Naples for sunshine and warmth, though the inhabitants living in its immediate neighbourhood scarcely regard it in the same light. Its eruptions have of lateyearsbeen less severe than formerly, and none has ever since taken place equal to the one which destroyed Pompeii. When it is prognosticated that a fresh one is coming all the visitors to the towns and seaside resorts in the vicinity flock to Naples, and excursions are daily made to it and when it actually begins its eruptions hot a bed is sometimes to be obtained.

This is a picture that has often and often employed the pencil of the artist, so unique is it in style and so romantic in its surroundings. The soft rustling of the trees and the murmur of the never silent river, made bright and shining in the noonday sun, are very pleasant and cheering to the traveller and solitary tourist; one of which latter we see before us drinking in the scene with evident delight
