alb3605357 The Harvesters. Artist: Pieter Bruegel the Elder (Netherlandish, Breda (?) ca. 1525-1569 Brussels). Dimensions: Overall, including added strips at top, bottom, and right, 46 7/8 x 63 3/4 in. (119 x 162 cm); original painted surface 45 7/8 x 62 7/8 in. (116.5 x 159.5 cm). Date: 1565.This panel belongs to a series, commissioned by the Antwerp merchant Niclaes Jongelinck for his suburban home. The cycle originally included six paintings showing the times of the year. Apart from The Harvesters, which is usually identified as representing July-August, or late summer, four other paintings of the group have survived (now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, and Lobkowicz Collection, Prague). Bruegel's series is a watershed in the history of western art. The religious pretext for landscape painting has been suppressed in favor of a new humanism, and the unidealized description of the local scene is based on natural observations. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: PIETER BRUEGEL THE ELDER.

By 1621 the painting was owned by Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, along with other mythological works by the artist (two are in the Frick Collection, New York), but its original owner is unknown. A masterpiece of light and color, works such as this had an enduring impact on later artists including Velázquez and Giambattista Tiepolo. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: 1870-71.Alfrederick Smith Hatch (1829-1904) was a prominent Wall Street broker in the firm of Fisk and Hatch and president of the New York Stock Exchange from 1883 to 1884. Like many of his business associates, he was an enthusiastic collector of art. One of the finest paintings in his collection was this commissioned group portrait showing three generations of his family. It depicts them in the library of their New York residence at 49 Park Avenue, on the northeast corner of 39th Street. Hatch is seated to the right at his desk, and his wife, the former Theodosia Ruggles (1829-1908), leans on the mantel. alb3631623 Catharine Lorillard Wolfe (1828-1887). Artist: Alexandre Cabanel (French, Montpellier 1823-1889 Paris). Dimensions: 67 1/2 x 42 3/4 in. (171.5 x 108.6 cm). Date: 1876.In the mid-1870's, both Catharine and John Wolfe commissioned works from Cabanel, who had made his reputation as a painter of genre scenes and portraits of Second Empire aristocrats. He ordered a variant of Cabanel's most famous composition, The Birth of Venus (94.24.1), while she commissioned a Biblical figure painting and the present portrait. She sat for Cabanel in Paris, wearing a white satin evening dress that was the height of French fashion in 1876. Contemporary viewers admired the sitter's elegant hands and her stance as that of "a hostess receiving guests...full of flexibility and pliant, willowy grace, entirely American in its distinction and sensitive responsiveness."The portrait presided over the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Collection when it was first exhibited at the Museum in November 1887. It was hung directly across from the portrait by Daniel Huntington of the donor's father, John David Wolfe (now in the American Wing; 87.15.78). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: 1891.Before embarking on a series of pictures inspired by Polynesian religious beliefs, Gauguin devoted this, his first major Tahitian canvas, to a Christian theme, describing it in a letter of March 1892: "An angel with yellow wings reveals Mary and Jesus, both Tahitians, to two Tahitian women, nudes dressed in pareus, a sort of cotton cloth printed with flowers that can be draped from the waist. Very somber, mountainous background and flowering trees . a dark violet path and an emerald green foreground, with bananas on the left. I'm rather happy with it." alb3653231 Madonna and Child. Artist: Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90?-1576 Venice). Dimensions: Overall 18 x 22 in. (45.7 x 55.9 cm); painted surface 17 x 21 1/2 in. (43.2 x 54.6 cm). Date: ca. 1508.This is among the earliest devotional paintings of the Madonna and Child by Titian, dating to about 1508. Technical study has revealed that the artist first posed the figures sitting erect and in the center of the canvas, a composition closer to those by Giovanni Bellini. The final pose is more informal and suggests a tender rapport between the mother and child. The picture has been strongly cleaned in the past and has lost much of its delicacy of definition. alb3617601 The Visit to the Nursery. Artist: Gabriël Metsu (Dutch, Leiden 1629-1667 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 30 1/2 x 32 in. (77.5 x 81.3 cm). Date: 1661.In an impressively appointed room, modeled on a large chamber in the new Town Hall of Amsterdam, the parents of a newborn baby receive a fashionable well-wisher. Such a kraambezoek (cradle visit) was a minor ritual of polite society. At least two of the poses recall figures by one of Holland's closest observers of modern manners, Gerard ter Borch. The painting was celebrated in its own time--for example, in a poem by Jan Vos of 1662--but unfortunately its surface is badly worn from cleanings in the past. alb3631459 Peasant Woman Cooking by a Fireplace. Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, Zundert 1853-1890 Auvers-sur-Oise). Dimensions: 17 3/8 x 15 in. (44.1 x 38.1 cm). Date: 1885.This work was made in Nuenen in late spring 1885, just after Van Gogh completed The Potato Eaters (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam), in the same dark hues that reminded the artist of "green soap" or "a really dusty potato, unpeeled of course." Van Gogh was "convinced that in the long run it produces better results to paint [peasants] in their coarseness than to introduce conventional sweetness... If a peasant painting smells of bacon, smoke, potato steam--fine--that's not unhealthy--if a stable smells of manure--very well, that's what a stable's for.". alb3644350 The Woman in the Waves. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 25 3/4 x 21 1/4 in. (65.4 x 54 cm). Date: 1868.Between 1864 and 1868 Courbet undertook a series of paintings of the female nude. He could not have failed to witness the triumph of Alexandre Cabanel's Birth of Venus (Musée d'Orsay, Paris) at the Salon of 1863, along with the popularity of similar representations by Cabanel's fellow academicians. Here, Courbet evokes the myth of Venus, the goddess born of the sea, but slyly subverts convention by depicting the model's underarm hair--an element of realism amplified by the almost palpable quality of her flesh. alb3643462 The Natchez. Artist: Eugène Delacroix (French, Charenton-Saint-Maurice 1798-1863 Paris). Dimensions: 35 1/2 x 46 in. (90.2 x 116.8 cm). Date: 1823-24 and 1835.In 1823, Delacroix began to paint this scene from Chateaubriand's widely read Romantic novel Atala, which narrates the fate of the Natchez tribe in the wake of the French and Indian War (1754-63). After putting the canvas aside for about a decade, he finally completed the picture for the Paris Salon of 1835. In the catalogue, Delacroix provided this explanatory note: "Fleeing the massacre of their tribe, two young savages traveled up the Mississippi River. During the voyage, the woman was taken by pain of labor. The moment is that when the father holds the newborn in his hands, and both regard him tenderly.".
