alb3682386 Merrymakers at Shrovetide. Artist: Frans Hals (Dutch, Antwerp 1582/83-1666 Haarlem). Dimensions: 51 3/4 x 39 1/4 in. (131.4 x 99.7 cm). Date: ca. 1616-17.The loud style of this early work by Hals suits its subject, which is Vastenavond (Shrovetide or Mardi Gras), a pre-Lenten carnival featuring bad food and worse behavior. Two characters from the comic stage, Peeckelhaering (Pickled Herring) and Hans Wurst (John Wiener?), cozy up to a young "lady" with a Dutch boy haircut and a bull neck. Hans's gesture, the deflated bagpipe, and other motifs comprise a chorus of sexual commentary. The picture looks surprisingly Flemish in its vivid coloring, loose brushwork, and crowded composition, which suggests that it may date from slightly after Hals's three months in Antwerp during 1616. In that mecca for Netherlandish artists he could have seen great works by Rubens and the early paintings of his own Flemish counterpart, Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: FRANS HALS.

(55.56 x 31.75 x 1.59 cm) (panel), Tempera on panel, Italy, 15th century, Saint Paul and Saint Sirus are panel paintings likely from the same large altarpiece. Panel painting was a lengthy process that required many steps. The panel is a plank of wood that was prepared with many layers of gesso, a glue-size-chalk substance that forms the white base layer of the paintings. Gesso is also used to create the raised areas, or pastiglia, seen in each painting: the top of staff and edges of the headpiece in Saint Sirus and areas on the hilt of the sword in Saint Paul. Red bole, a size-clay mixture, was added to areas that were to be gilded with gold leaf. The final step was painting the figures in numerous layers of egg tempera, a paint made of ground pigments, water, and egg yolk.

alb4494599 Domestic altar with the Last Supper House altar with the Last Supper, presumably from the Commandery of Sint Jan in Harderwijk, The altar is made up of a postament, a quadrangular center piece and a main frame with crowning. Two alabaster columns with composite capitals rest on the postament crumbled in the corners, which, with the pilasters located behind, carry a head frame that is also cramped. They enclose a relief with the Last Supper, enclosed on the sides and at the top in a narrow egg frame. The evening meal takes place in an interior, the back wall of which is formed by arches resting on fluted pilasters. Against this is the throne on which Christ is seated with John in front of him. They sit in the midst of the apostles at a set table, on which are square 'tin' slices, a bowl of lamb, a chalice and bread. On the benches in front of the table are three apostles, among whom Judas, recognizable by the money pouch, to whom Christ gives the bread. In the foreground on the right a jug and on the left a jug. In the crown a relief, rounded off from the top, on which Mary, sitting on clouds, with the Child on a cloud on the right in front of her, and John with the lamb on the left. Mary holds a fruit in every hand. The postament has a relief with the pre-representation of the Eucharist: on the left stands the king-priest Melchisedek with bread and wine in front of Abraham hurrying up in his pseudo-Roman costume. Melchisedek announces his victory over Kedor-Laomer and the Kings. Behind Abraham a man holds a prancing horse by the bridle, to his right his only horsemen are engaged in battle, on the bottom a defeated warrior and a running dog. Reliefs on both left and right with both male and female nude, fruit garlands ceasing. To the left and right of the crunches, respectively, a man in Roman costume and a nude with helmet, both in scrollwork, cartouches on the sides of the crumpled. The architrave shows a narrow decorative relief: in the middle a mascaron in a slit.
