alb3633803 Eugène Murer (Hyacinthe-Eugène Meunier, 1841-1906). Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 18 1/2 x 15 1/2 in. (47 x 39.4 cm). Date: 1877.Murer was an artist, celebrated pastry cook, restaurateur, novelist, poet, and avid collector of Impressionist paintings. By 1887, ten years after he sat for this portrait, he had amassed some 122 works by his painter-friends, including 15 by Renoir, whom he called "the greatest artist of our century." It has been suggested that Murer's pose and gaze in this work served as a model for Van Gogh's famous portrait of another great Impressionist collector, Dr. Paul-Ferdinand Gachet (private collection), Murer's neighbor in Auvers. alb3682508 Two Young Girls at the Piano. Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 44 x 34 in. (111.8 x 86.4 cm). Date: 1892.In late 1891 or early 1892 Renoir was invited by the French government to execute a painting for a new museum in Paris, the Musée du Luxembourg, which was to be devoted to the work of living artists. He chose as his subject two girls at the piano. Aware of the intense scrutiny to which his submission would be subjected, Renoir lavished extraordinary care on this project, developing and refining the composition in a series of five canvases. The Lehman painting and the nearly identical version formerly in the collection of Renoir's fellow Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte have long been regarded as the most accomplished variants of this intimate and engaging scene of bourgeois domestic life. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: AUGUSTE RENOIR.

alb3638401 Figures on the Beach. Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 20 3/4 x 25 1/4 in. (52.7 x 64.1 cm). Date: 1890.Probably painted in 1890 on the Cote d'Azur in southern France, this sun-filled painting shows two female figures at the beach. The seated figure is shown in profile, her right hand holding a parasol on the sand. She exchanges a look with the standing figure to her right who holds a basket at her side. The women are joined by a small white dog, and before the water stands a young boy dressed in blue, seemingly throwing an object into the ocean. The standing figure serves as a vertical force which connects the horizontally banded foreground, water, and sky. The women appear carefree and neither at work nor in the presence of men. Painted later in Renoir's career, a period at which point the artist expressed skepticism of industrialism and machines, this quiet seascape pays homage to the resplendent beauty of what is ordinary and simple. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: AUGUSTE RENOIR.

alb3672676 The Green Car. Artist: William James Glackens (American, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1870-1938 Westport, Connecticut). Dimensions: 24 x 32 in. (61 x 81.3 cm). Date: 1910.William Glackens was a keen observer and able recorder of the rhythm and details that comprised daily life for urban dwellers in early twentieth-century America. As a young man he earned a living as an artist-reporter for several newspapers and magazines, first in his native Philadelphia, then in his adopted home of New York after 1896. His recording of the episodic drama of everyday occurrences served him well in his other career as a painter, in which he was able to capture the smallest details of gesture and incident, thus endowing his canvases with a sense of spontaneity and life. In his early years in Philadelphia, Glackens came into contact with some of the artists who, with him, became known as The Eight, later called the Ashcan School: Robert Henri, John Sloan, Everett Shinn, George Luks, Ernest Lawson, Maurice Prendergast, and Arthur B. Davis. He gained recognition for his paintings in The Eight's only exhibition, held at the Macbeth Gallery in Manhattan in 1908. The group shocked the art establishment with its preference for painting contemporary urban scenes in a forthright manner, rather than traditional academic subject matter. Of all the members, Glackens was most obviously influenced by Impressionist paintings, which he had seen during trips to France in 1895-96 and 1906, particularly the feathery brushwork and high-keyed palette of Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Glackens had a studio on Washington Square Park in New York City's bohemian Greenwich Village, from which he painted "The Green Car." In this picture, a green trolley car rounds the corner at the south side of the park on its way to pick up a lady standing by the snowy curb. Dressed smartly in a long coat, hat, and muff, she signals to the conductor. In viewing this carefully structured composition, our eye moves from front to back, following the route of the trolley and the converging pathways through the park until we reach the row of three-story brick buildings in the background. The overall effect of the picture is one of energy and movement enhanced by the consistently animated brushwork and bright mix of colors used throughout the composition. . alb3626169 Young Girl Bathing. Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 32 x 25 1/2 in. (81.3 x 64.8 cm). Date: 1892.Pierre Auguste Renoir painted a great many canvases of single bathers in outdoor settings, timeless studies of fulsome young women. In the Lehman painting, his model averts her glance, seated in shy three-quarter profile. Innocent yet sensual, this charming nude would have pleased Renoir's audience in the later nineteenth century. The picture is thinly painted, its brushwork soft and supple. Renoir probably posed his model in the studio, since the rapidly brushed landscape background is far more imaginary than real. Claude Monet first owned this painting, and remarked to a friend that while the nude was beautiful, the landscape was conventional. Renoir clearly concentrates his brush on the undulating physiognomy of his innocent auburn-haired model. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3608672 In the Meadow. Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 32 x 25 3/4 in. (81.3 x 65.4 cm). Date: 1888-92.Between 1888 and 1892 Renoir painted a number of works in which the same pair of girls--the blonde wearing a white frock and the brunette a pink one--engage in leisurely pastimes. Here, they pick flowers; the same models appear at the piano in a painting now in the Museum's Lehman Collection (1975.1.201). These intimate genre scenes, which celebrate youthful innocence, found a ready market in the early 1890s. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: AUGUSTE RENOIR.

alb3654055 The Daughters of Catulle Mendès, Huguette (1871-1964), Claudine (1876-1937), and Helyonne (1879-1955). Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 63 3/4 x 51 1/8 in. (161.9 x 129.9 cm). Date: 1888.Hoping to recapture the success he had achieved with Madame Georges Charpentier and Her Children (07.122) at the Salon of 1879, Renoir sought to paint the daughters of his friend Catulle Mendès. In addition to the girls' manifest charm, he undoubtedly counted on the notoriety of their bohemian parents to gain attention: their father was a Symbolist poet and publisher, and their mother was the virtuoso pianist Augusta Holmès. Renoir completed the commission in a matter of weeks and immediately exhibited the large canvas in May 1888, but the response to his new manner of painting, with its intense hues and schematized faces, was unenthusiastic. alb3613675 By the Seashore. Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 36 1/4 x 28 1/2 in. (92.1 x 72.4 cm). Date: 1883.Renoir likely painted this work in his studio, posing his model and future wife, Aline Charigot, in a wicker chair. The beach behind her probably represents the Normandy coast near Dieppe. This canvas reflects the impact of Renoir's trip to Italy in 1881-82, which inspired him to unite the "grandeur and simplicity" he admired in Renaissance art with the luminosity of Impressionism. His new approach, which he called his "dry" manner, is evident in Aline's face, with its carefully drawn features and smooth handling of paint. The medley of quick strokes in the background, however, displays the freer technique of Renoir's earlier years. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: AUGUSTE RENOIR.
