Date: 1892.Pierre Auguste Renoir painted a great many canvases of single bathers in outdoor settings, timeless studies of fulsome young women. In the Lehman painting, his model averts her glance, seated in shy three-quarter profile. Innocent yet sensual, this charming nude would have pleased Renoir's audience in the later nineteenth century. The picture is thinly painted, its brushwork soft and supple. Renoir probably posed his model in the studio, since the rapidly brushed landscape background is far more imaginary than real. Claude Monet first owned this painting, and remarked to a friend that while the nude was beautiful, the landscape was conventional. Renoir clearly concentrates his brush on the undulating physiognomy of his innocent auburn-haired model. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: 1888-92.Between 1888 and 1892 Renoir painted a number of works in which the same pair of girls--the blonde wearing a white frock and the brunette a pink one--engage in leisurely pastimes. Here, they pick flowers; the same models appear at the piano in a painting now in the Museum's Lehman Collection (1975.1.201). These intimate genre scenes, which celebrate youthful innocence, found a ready market in the early 1890s. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: AUGUSTE RENOIR.

alb3606812 Madame Édouard Bernier (Marie-Octavie-Stéphanie Laurens, 1838-1920). Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 30 3/4 x 24 1/2 in. (78.1 x 62.2 cm). Date: 1871.Marie-Octavie Bernier was the wife of the commander of Renoir's regiment during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). In the spring of 1871, Renoir stayed with the couple, who were living with her father in the town of Tarbes in southwestern France. Enjoying their hospitality and a level of comfort that is reflected in this portrait, Renoir fondly recalled that he spent "two months in a château," where he was "treated like a prince," rode horses every day, and taught his hosts' daughter to paint. alb3658426 A Waitress at Duval's Restaurant. Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 39 1/2 x 28 1/8 in. (100.3 x 71.4 cm). Date: ca. 1875.Renoir portrays a waitress who worked at one of several Parisian restaurants established by a butcher named Duval. An 1881 Baedeker guidebook described these "Établissements de Bouillon" as offering a limited and affordable menu to patrons "waited on by women, soberly garbed, and not unlike sisters of charity." Renoir imparted to his comely model an unaffected grace. As he once said, "I like painting best when it looks eternal without boasting about it: an everyday eternity, revealed on the street corner: a servant-girl pausing a moment as she scours a saucepan, and becoming a Juno on Olympus.". Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3613675 By the Seashore. Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 36 1/4 x 28 1/2 in. (92.1 x 72.4 cm). Date: 1883.Renoir likely painted this work in his studio, posing his model and future wife, Aline Charigot, in a wicker chair. The beach behind her probably represents the Normandy coast near Dieppe. This canvas reflects the impact of Renoir's trip to Italy in 1881-82, which inspired him to unite the "grandeur and simplicity" he admired in Renaissance art with the luminosity of Impressionism. His new approach, which he called his "dry" manner, is evident in Aline's face, with its carefully drawn features and smooth handling of paint. The medley of quick strokes in the background, however, displays the freer technique of Renoir's earlier years. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: AUGUSTE RENOIR.

alb3645587 Tilla Durieux (Ottilie Godeffroy, 1880-1971). Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 36 1/4 x 29 in. (92.1 x 73.7 cm). Date: 1914.In July 1914, just prior to the outbreak of World War I, the famous German actress Tilla Durieux traveled to Paris with her husband, the art dealer Paul Cassirer, to pose for Renoir. The classicizing, pyramidal format of this composition lends a certain grandeur to the sitter, attired in the costume that the couturier Poiret designed for her role as Eliza Doolittle in George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion in 1913. When Renoir painted this ambitious portrait, he was so crippled with arthritis that he had to sit in a wheelchair with his brush strapped to his hand. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: AUGUSTE RENOIR.
