alb3610341 The Card Players. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 25 3/4 x 32 1/4 in. (65.4 x 81.9 cm). Date: 1890-92.This is probably the first in a series of five paintings that Cézanne devoted to peasants playing cards. Enlisting local farmhands to serve as models, he may have drawn inspiration for his genre scene from a seventeenth-century painting by the Le Nain brothers in the museum in his hometown of Aix. The Metropolitan's picture was followed by a version twice its size, which includes the additional figure of a standing child at right (Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia). In the last three compositions, Cézanne continuously pared away details, focusing on just a pair of card players. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb4158182 Male Nude. Paul Cézanne; French, 1839-1906. Date: 1863-1866. Dimensions: 314 × 461 mm. Black chalk, with touches of stumping, on mottled blue-gray laid paper, altered to a light gray tone. Origin: France. Museum: The Chicago Art Institute, Chicago, USA.

alb3638291 The Pool at Jas de Bouffan. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 25 1/2 x 31 7/8 in. (64.8 x 81 cm). Date: ca. 1885-86.Cézanne's affection for his family's estate, Jas de Bouffan, near Aix, is reflected in the many views he painted of the property over a quarter century. He depicted the road at the lower right in this composition several times in the mid-1880s. Bordered with chestnut trees, it led from the back of an eighteenth-century house to landscaped gardens. Near the rail dividing the areas was a pool for collecting water and a washing trough, visible in the middle ground. The pool was flanked by waterspouts in the shape of lions, one of which may be seen here from behind. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3678799 Gardanne. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 31 1/2 x 25 1/4 in. (80 x 64.1 cm). Date: 1885-86.This is one of three views of Gardanne, a hill town near Aix-en-Provence where Cézanne worked from the summer of 1885 through the spring of 1886. The steeple of the local church crowns the cluster of red-roofed buildings which animate the sloping terrain. Faceted and geometric, the structures anticipate early-twentieth-century Cubism. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3676915 Still Life with a Ginger Jar and Eggplants. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 28 1/2 x 36 in. (72.4 x 91.4 cm). Date: 1893-94.For this commanding still life, with its richly orchestrated play of overlapping shapes, patterns, colors, and textures, Cézanne relied on a stock of familiar objects. The raffia-corded ginger jar, for example, is featured in more than a dozen compositions, including three of comparable verve dating to the early 1890s. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3671932 Gustave Boyer (b. 1840) in a Straw Hat. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 21 5/8 x 15 1/4 in. (54.9 x 38.7 cm). Date: 1870-71.Early twentieth-century scholars identified this man with mutton-chop sideburns as Cézanne himself, but he is actually the artist's boyhood friend Gustave Boyer, a lawyer who sat for two other portraits around 1870-71. The painterly surface of this canvas, the liberal use of black and gray, and the boldly realized forms are typical of Cézanne's work at the time. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3620562 Mont Sainte-Victoire. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 22 1/2 x 38 1/4 in. (57.2 x 97.2 cm). Date: ca. 1902-6.Cézanne worked on this, one of the grandest pictures of Mont Sainte-Victoire, over a considerable length of time, enlarging the canvas in order to extend the view at the right and in the foreground. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3627769 Seated Peasant. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 21 1/2 x 17 3/4 in. (54.6 x 45.1 cm). Date: ca. 1892-96.The mood and palette of this pensive figure study relate it to Cézanne's celebrated series of paintings showing men playing cards. This particular individual does not appear in any of those pictures, but there can be no doubt that he, like the models for the card players, was one of the workers at Jas de Bouffan, the Cézanne family estate in Aix-en-Provence. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3600862 Madame Cézanne (Hortense Fiquet, 1850-1922) in a Red Dress. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 45 7/8 x 35 1/4 in. ( 116.5 x 89.5 cm). Date: 1888-90.Of the four portraits that Cézanne painted of his wife wearing a shawl-collared red dress, this is the only one to show her in an elaborately furnished interior. Seated in a high-backed yellow chair and wedged between well-placed props that seem to bend to her form and shift to her weight, Madame Cézanne is the lynchpin of a tilting, spatially complex composition. The mottled blue wall, the dark red band that edges the wainscoting, and the mirror over the fireplace at left identify the setting as the apartment that Cézanne rented at 15 quai d'Anjou, Paris, from 1888 to 1890. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3607725 Rocks in the Forest. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 28 7/8 x 36 3/8 in. (73.3 x 92.4 cm). Date: 1890s.Cézanne treated the rocks in this composition much as he did the fruits in his still lifes, rendering the shapes with passages of subtly varied color. Green, blue, and purple tints, with an accent of golden sunlight at center, impart a shimmering vibrancy to the stones. The sense of delicacy is enhanced by the thin, watercolor-like application of pigment, typical of Cézanne's oils in the mid-1890s. Scholars traditionally identified the setting as the forest of Fontainebleau, where the artist worked around 1894, but it has also been suggested that the site is near Aix-en-Provence. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3654498 The House with the Cracked Walls. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 31 1/2 x 25 1/4 in. (80 x 64.1 cm). Date: 1892-94.Cézanne often painted abandoned sites near his studio outside Aix, but he depicted this house, with its sinister crevice, only once. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3655837 Mont Sainte-Victoire and the Viaduct of the Arc River Valley. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 25 3/4 x 32 1/8 in. (65.4 x 81.6 cm). Date: 1882-85.The distinctive silhouette of Mont Saint-Victoire rises above the Arc River valley near the town of Aix. To paint this scene, Cézanne stood close to Montbriand, his sister's property, at the top of the hill just behind her house; the wall of the neighboring farmhouse is barely visible. Cézanne sought to reveal the inner geometry of nature, "to make of Impressionism something solid and durable, like the art of museums." Indeed the railroad viaduct that cuts throught this pastoral scene is evocative of a Roman aqueduct, recalling paintings by Nicolas Poussin. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3614891 Apples. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 9 x 13 in. (22.9 x 33 cm). Date: 1878-79.This composition combines two separate studies that are unrelated to any known painting by Cézanne. The brownish tone that covers areas at the lower left and along the right edge may have been added by Cézanne's dealer, Ambroise Vollard, who sold this picture to the painter Édouard Vuillard in exchange for one of the artist's own works. The present canvas is thought to date to 1878-79, but 1883-87 has also been proposed. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3619917 Still Life with Jar, Cup, and Apples. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 23 7/8 x 29 in. (60.6 x 73.7 cm). Date: ca. 1877.In addition to apples--a favorite motif of Cézanne's--the ceramic jar and cup seen in this still life feature in numerous paintings by the artist. The wallpaper in the background appears in six works that he painted about 1877, when he rented an apartment at 67 rue de l'Ouest, Paris. Its pattern is echoed both by the shape of the white cloth on which the everyday items are arranged and by the painted floral decoration on the front of the wooden chest. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3647137 Antoine Dominique Sauveur Aubert (born 1817), the Artist's Uncle, as a Monk. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 25 5/8 x 21 1/2 in. (65.1 x 54.6 cm). Date: 1866.In the fall of 1866 Cézanne painted nine portraits of his maternal uncle, Dominique Aubert. The forty-nine-year-old bailiff indulged his nephew with multiple sittings and agreed to pose in various costumes. Whereas he is shown here in the habit of a Dominican monk, in another likeness (53.140.1) he wears a tasseled cap and robe.In the mid-1860s the young Cézanne applied paint thickly with a palette knife in emulation of his hero Courbet. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3640079 Antoine Dominique Sauveur Aubert (born 1817), the Artist's Uncle. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 31 3/8 x 25 1/4 in. (79.7 x 64.1 cm). Date: 1866.In the autumn of 1866, while living at his family's home near Aix-en-Provence, Cézanne undertook a series of paintings of his maternal uncle, Dominique Aubert, in different costumes. Here, he dons a robe and tasseled blue cap; in another work in the Museum's collection, he poses as a monk (1993.400.1). A friend reported in November: "Every day there appears a [new] portrait of him." Cézanne applied his paint directly with a palette knife on the coarsely woven canvas, giving these pictures what he called a "gutsy" character. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3668472 Still Life with Apples and Pears. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 17 5/8 x 23 1/8 in. (44.8 x 58.7 cm). Date: ca. 1891-92.Cézanne once proclaimed, "With an apple I want to astonish Paris," and he succeeded, even in his most deceptively simple still lifes, to dazzle and delight. Turning to the Provençal apples and Beurré Diel pears grown in the vicinity of the family's estate near Aix, he dispensed with traditional one-point perspective and examined the fruit, plates, and table from various viewpoints--straight on, above, and sideways. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3521325 Still Life with Apples and a Pot of Primroses, ca. 1890, Oil on canvas, 28 3/4 x 36 3/8 in. (73 x 92.4 cm), Paintings, Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839–1906 Aix-en-Provence), Cézanne rarely painted flowering plants or fresh-cut bouquets, which were susceptible to wilting under his protracted gaze. He included potted plants only in three still lifes, two views of the conservatory at the Jas de Bouffan, and about a dozen exquisite watercolors made over the course of two decades (from about 1878 to 1906).
