alb9431222 Leda and the Swan, c. 1710, Antonio Montauti, Italian, 16831746, 18 in. (45.72 cm), Bronze, Italy, 18th century, Zeus, the ancient Greek god of the sky and thunder, desired Leda, the beautiful wife of Tyndareus, king of Sparta. To win her affection, he assumed the elegant guise of a swan and approached her on a riverbank. In Montautis work, the two are shown in a tender embrace, with the swan inclining intently to meet the mortal Ledas affectionate gaze. Their close eye contact suggests they share not only a physical attractionthe main focus of most artistic representations of the subjectbut a psychological attraction as well. Note too the variety of vivid surface textures the artist achieves, from Ledas supple flesh to the swans delicate plumage to the misty vapor of the cloud that encircles both figures.

(41.9 x 54.6 x 21.6 cm), Terra cotta, France, 19th century, Based upon a chalk drawing by the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo (1475-1564), this terra cotta sculpture depicts Leda, the ancient Queen of Sparta, being seduced by the Greek god Zeus in the guise of a swan. Dating back to Greek mythology, Leda and the Swan offered artists an acceptable motif for erotic depiction. The French sculptor Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse chose this mythological subject to embody the sensuality of the reclining female form and evoke the artistic traditions of the great Renaissance masters.

The Dioscuri were Castor and Polydeuces (or Pollux), the twin sons of Leda and Zeus and the brothers of Helen of Troy. Because Zeus came to Leda in the form of a swan, they are sometimes presented as having been born from an egg. Pollux was a formidable boxer, and Castor was a great horseman. Together, they were the " Heavenly Twins, " often associated with the constellation Gemini.
