alb3623533 Portrait of a Man. Artist: Jan Gossart (called Mabuse) (Netherlandish, Maubeuge ca. 1478-1532 Antwerp (?)). Dimensions: 18 1/2 x 13 3/4 in. (47 x 34.9 cm). Date: ca. 1520-25.This is the only independent portrait by Gossart that is signed; the scroll reads, "Joannes Malbodius pingebat." The sitter is turned to the left in a three-quarter view against a dark background, a format that derives from the earlier portraiture tradition of Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. Like his predecessors, Gossart paid careful attention to tiny details such as the stubble of the beard and the individually painted hairs of the eyebrows, but he emphasized the sculptural form of the sitter in a new and bold way. " This painting may be a replica of Gossart's lost original portrait of Anna van Bergen, the wife of Adolf of Burgundy, marquis de Veere, and their son, Hendrik, in the guise of the Virgin and Child. As such, Anna aspired to emulate the standard of ideal virtue and motherhood exemplified by the Virgin. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3652781 Christ Carrying the Cross. Artist: Jan Gossart (called Mabuse) (Netherlandish, Maubeuge ca. 1478-1532 Antwerp (?)). Dimensions: 9 7/8 × 7 1/2 in. (25.1 × 19 cm). Date: ca. 1520-25.Christ appears isolated outside the walls of Jerusalem, stumbling and weighed down by the heavy burden of the cross. His elaborate pose reflects Gossart's study of Roman sculpture. Intended for private meditation, Gossart's poignant depiction of the suffering Savior responds to widely popular texts such as Thomas à Kempis's De Imitatione Christi (Imitation of Christ, about 1420), which advocated personal and empathic contemplation focused on the individual events of Christ's Passion. Used as a visual aid for private devotion, the small painting was most likely either hung on a wall or hand-held. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Jan Gossart (called Mabuse).

alb3647771 The Holy Family. Artist: Jan Gossart (called Mabuse) (Netherlandish, Maubeuge ca. 1478-1532 Antwerp (?)). Dimensions: 6 1/8 x 5 in. (15.5 x 12.7 cm). Date: ca. 1510-20.In this drawing, Gossart depicted the Holy Family sitting on a bench next to a tree, of which we can see only the trunk. The Virgin Mary dangles the naked Christ Child on her lap as he turns his head to look at us. Next to them is Joseph, who offers Mary a flower. Gossart paid a great deal of attention to the drapery folds. Their detailed execution and almost sculptural quality are in contrast to the sketchier, less-worked-out figures. In the background, faint lines seem to indicate first thoughts for a possible architectural setting. The exquisite drawing might have been a preliminary study for an unidentified painting or print. Another possibility is that the drawing was meant to be an independent work, but for an unknown reason the artist left it unfinished. Among the most technically virtuous artists of the early sixteenth century and one of the earliest exponents of Antwerp Mannerism, Gossart worked for a number of influential courts and patrons, including Philip of Burgundy, Adolf of Burgundy, and Christian II, king of Denmark. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
