alb3647207 The Witches. Artist: Hans Baldung (called Hans Baldung Grien) (German, Schwäbisch Gmünd (?) 1484/85-1545 Strasbourg (Strassburg)). Dimensions: Sheet: 15 5/16 × 10 5/8 in. (38.9 × 27 cm). Date: 1510.A masterpiece of German chiaroscuro, this woodcut is one of Hans Baldung Grien's best known prints, produced soon after his move to Strasbourg from Nuremberg, where he had worked as a journeyman with Albrecht Dürer from about 1503 to 1507. Although Baldung was not the inventor of the chiaroscuro woodcut--the credit for this must go to Hans Burgkmair--he was among the very earliest and most effective practitioners of the medium. The tone block for this woodcut is sometimes printed in an orange-brown, casting a hellish glow onto the scene; here the use of a gray tone block creates an atmosphere of nocturnal gloom from which the three witches emerge, gathered around the steaming cauldron of "flying unguent." The flickering highlights, where the white of the paper is exposed, give three-dimensional presence to forms that would otherwise be engulfed by the dark setting and, by continuing the modeling of the dark hatching strokes, powerfully define the volumes of the monumental nudes, the blasted tree, and the solid coils of steam that support the witches as they ascend in the night air.The interest in witchcraft in the German-speaking countries was especially strong at the beginning of the sixteenth century, heralded by the publication in 1487 of the Malleus Maleficarum (The Witches' Hammer) by Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, which was reprinted fourteen times before 1520. alb3620095 Group of Seven Horses. Artist: Hans Baldung (called Hans Baldung Grien) (German, Schwäbisch Gmünd (?) 1484/85-1545 Strasbourg (Strassburg)). Dimensions: sheet: 8-5/8 x 12-7/8 in. (21.8 x 32.6 cm). Date: 1534.In 1534 Baldung made three woodcuts of wild horses in a dark and dense forest, a subject unique to him that had neither precedent nor following. The prints are so idiosyncratic that they must have had strong personal meaning for him, then in about his fiftieth year. Even though the horses and their poses do not look entirely real, they are fascinating in their strangeness and intensity. This is the least overtly sexual of the three works, but it may be guessed that the stallions are fighting for possession of a mare. In the equestrian monument or portrait, in both antiquity and the Renaissance, the horse was deemed a noble creature, a fitting mount for the ruler or leader being glorified, and both Leonardo da Vinci and Dürer made plans for treatises on the ideal proportions of the horse. Also since antiquity, however, horses--both stallions and mares--were equally reputed to be extraordinarily lustful. Further, in Germanic folklore the horse was associated with evil forces often having to do with witchcraft. The larger subject of these woodcuts, with their violence and pent-up energy, is the power of forces beyond man's understanding or control, specifically the overwhelming strength of the carnal instinct. alb9337071 St. Christopher., Heinrich Aldegrever, engraver (printmaker), 1527, Germany, engraving, Heinrich Aldegrever was one of the so-called 'Little Masters', a group of German artists making small prints in the generation after Albrecht Dürer, who included Hans Baldung Grien, the Beham brothers and Georg Pencz. The close resemblance of his early work (as here) to that of Dürer led to Aldegrever being called the 'Albert of Westphalia', although his style went on to depart from his mentor's intricate line work to stress the optical effects of light and shadow. Aldegrever became a Lutheran convert in 1531, four years after this early career engraving, however, its theme would have been equally acceptable to Protestants and Catholics. Many of his subsequent works were ornamental engravings, used as models by artists and craftsmen well into the 17th century, while his images of virtues and vices are well represented in Te Papa's collection.
