alb3632520 Narcisa Barañana de Goicoechea. Artist: Attributed to Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes) (Spanish, Fuendetodos 1746-1828 Bordeaux). Dimensions: 44 1/4 x 30 3/4 in. (112.4 x 78.1 cm). This painting first came to light in 1900, when it was lent to the large Goya exhibition in Madrid as the pendant to a portrait of the sitter's husband, Juan Bautista de Goicoechea y Urrutia. Juan Bautista was appointed Minister of War to Ferdinand VII in 1815 and in his portrait (now in the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlesruhe) wears the order of Charles III, received in the same year. He was apparently distantly related to Gumersinda Goicoechea, who married Goya's son Javier in 1805. Our portrait may have been painted close to the time of Javier's marriage, but was certainly executed by 1815/16.Despite the signature on the ring--a favorite device of Goya's--the attribution of this portrait has recently been questioned by some authorities. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3636398 Plate 43 from 'Los Caprichos': The sleep of reason produces monsters (El sueño de la razon produce monstruos). Artist: Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes) (Spanish, Fuendetodos 1746-1828 Bordeaux). Dimensions: Plate: 8 3/8 x 5 15/16 in. (21.2 x 15.1 cm)Sheet: 11 5/8 x 8 1/4 in. (29.5 x 21 cm). Series/Portfolio: Los Caprichos. Date: 1799.This is the best known image from Goya's series of 80 aquatint etchings published in 1799 known as 'Los Caprichos' that are generally understood as the artist's criticism of the society in which he lived. Goya worked on the series from around 1796-98 and many drawings for the prints survive. The inscription on the preparatory drawing for this print, now in the Prado Museum in Madrid, indicates that it was originally intended as the title page to the series. In the published edition, this print became plate 43, the number we can see in the top right corner. Nevertheless, it has come to symbolise the overall meaning of the series, what happens when reason is absent. Various animals including bats and owls fly above the sleeping artist, and at the lower right a lynx watches vigilantly alerting us to the rise of monstrous forces that we are able to control when sleep descends. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes).

alb3625381 José Costa y Bonells (died l870), Called Pepito. Artist: Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes) (Spanish, Fuendetodos 1746-1828 Bordeaux). Dimensions: 41 3/8 x 33 1/4 in. (105.1 x 84.5 cm). Date: ca. 1810.Pepito's father, Rafael Costa de Quintana, was doctor to King Ferdinand VII; his mother was the daughter of Jaime Bonells, doctor to the Alba family. The portrait is most closely related to works that Goya painted shortly after 1810 and seems to allude to the Spanish War of Independence, 1808-14. Pepito's jacket is tailored in imitation of a soldier's uniform, and his hair is cut in the Napoleonic fashion. The military analogy is further enhanced by the drum and the toy rifle with a fixed bayonet. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3629895 Condesa de Altamira and Her Daughter, María Agustina. Artist: Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes) (Spanish, Fuendetodos 1746-1828 Bordeaux). Dimensions: 76 3/4 x 45 1/4 in. (195 x 115 cm). Date: 1787-88.This imposing portrait is one of four that Goya painted of members of Count Altamira's family. (Another is the Museum's portrait of Don Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zuñiga [49.7.41].) The patronage of this powerful family greatly advanced the artist's career; shortly after this work was completed, he was appointed court painter to Charles IV, king of Spain. Goya's brilliant treatment of the countess' gown, with its shimmering embroidered silk, attests to his mastery of technique, while the distant, introspective expressions of the sitters reveal his ability to endow even the most formal of portraits with a penetrating psychological immediacy. Series/Portfolio: The Disasters of War. Date: 1810-20, published 1863.After Napoleon's invasion of Spain in 1807 and 1808 brought about the abdication of the Spanish king, violent protests against the French erupted in Madrid. The uprising of May 2, 1808, marked the start of the armed Spanish resistance, which dragged on in guerrilla warfare until 1814. During the war, Goya documented his horror and outrage at the atrocities committed by soldiers and patriots in his series of 80 prints 'The Disasters of War'. Never before had a story of man's inhumanity been told so compellingly, every episode reported with compassion, honesty and respect for the victims. Not until 1863, thirty-five years after Goya's death, was the first of seven posthumous editions of the Disasters published by Spain's Royal Academy, which in 1862 purchased all eighty etched copperplates.
