alb3636804 Self-Portrait. Artist: Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, Antwerp 1599-1641 London). Dimensions: 47 1/8 x 34 5/8 in. (119.7 x 87.9 cm). Date: ca. 1620-21.The young Van Dyck presents himself as a courtly gentleman, with no reference to his profession other than the painting itself. The portrait probably dates from the artist's stay in London during the winter of 1620-21, and certainly before he left his native Antwerp for Italy in autumn 1621. That Van Dyck's father dealt in fine fabrics partly explains his predilection for rich attire (which was remarked by Bellori, an early biographer) and perhaps his elegant descriptions of drapery. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3632280 Robert Rich (1587-1658), Second Earl of Warwick. Artist: Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, Antwerp 1599-1641 London). Dimensions: 81 7/8 x 50 3/8 in. (208 x 128 cm), with added strip of 2 1/8 in. (5.4 cm) at top. Date: ca. 1632-35.A Puritan sailor of fortune, the first earl of Warwick set up companies in Virginia and the Caribbean, helped colonize Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, and seized Spanish ships on behalf of the Duke of Savoy and Charles I. The latter's policies made Warwick side with Parliament as commander of the navy (from 1642). Despite allusions to his maritime adventures in the armor and ships, Warwick wears the everyday dress of an aristocrat and the witty smile for which he was known. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3672662 Portrait of a Man. Artist: Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, Antwerp 1599-1641 London). Dimensions: 41 3/4 x 28 5/8 in. (106 x 72.7 cm). Date: ca. 1618.This impressive portrait, painted about 1618 when the artist was eighteen or nineteen years old, is very close in style to contemporary and slightly earlier portraits by Rubens, for whom Van Dyck was working at the time. In its insistence on volume and textures, the close attention to costume detail, and the passive pose and expression, the painting also adheres to an older Netherlandish tradition, as seen in portraits by Anthonis Mor (ca. 1516/19-ca. 1575/76). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3673354 Study Head of a Young Woman. Artist: Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, Antwerp 1599-1641 London). Dimensions: 22 1/4 x 16 3/8 in. (56.5 x 41.6 cm). Date: ca. 1618-20.Study heads of this type were painted by Van Dyck using live models, whose features were then repeated in finished pictures, usually of religious subjects. Indeed, the present figure served as the prototype for a likeness of the Virgin in a depiction of the Holy Family. The iconography of the melancholy young woman with long hair streaming down her shoulders also suits images of Mary Magdalen; intriguingly, an early biographer tells us that Van Dyck once depicted his sister Susanna in that guise. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3606821 Virgin and Child with Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Artist: Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, Antwerp 1599-1641 London). Dimensions: 43 x 35 3/4 in. (109.2 x 90.8 cm); with added strips 44 1/8 x 37 in. (112.1 x 94 cm). Date: ca. 1630.The infant Jesus responds with playful enthusiasm to an adoring Saint Catherine, a former princess identified by pearls and a martyr's palm. She was esteemed as an intercessor for young women because of her mystical marriage to Christ. The picture's warm humanity and elegantly rhythmic composition reflect Van Dyck's great admiration for Titian, Veronese, and other North Italian artists during his years in Italy (1621-27). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3603995 Study Head of an Old Man with a White Beard. Artist: Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, Antwerp 1599-1641 London). Dimensions: 26 x 20 1/4 in. (66 x 51.4 cm). Date: ca. 1617-20.Rubens's practice of using real people as models for figures in his religious and mythological scenes was followed closely in Antwerp by his younger colleagues Jacob Jordaens and Anthony van Dyck. The present picture was once attributed to Rubens, but its comparatively soft forms and textured surfaces are typical of the young Van Dyck and contrast with Rubens's emphatic modeling and incisive draftsmanship. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3609358 James Stuart (1612-1655), Duke of Richmond and Lennox. Artist: Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, Antwerp 1599-1641 London). Dimensions: 85 x 50 1/4 in. (215.9 x 127.6 cm). Date: ca. 1633-35.In 1641 the fourth Duke of Lennox was created first Duke of Richmond by his cousin, Charles I, King of England. Four years earlier he had married Mary Villiers, daughter of the king's favorite, the Duke of Buckingham. Van Dyck probably painted this majestic portrait shortly after Stuart's investiture into the Order of the Garter, in November 1633. The silver star, the "Lesser George" medal on a green ribbon, and the garter itself (below the left knee) are the order's insignia. The greyhound suggests nobility (by alluding to their hunting privileges) and perhaps the virtue of fidelity. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
