alb3628440 Autopsy of the First Crocodile Onboard, Upper Egypt. Artist: Ernest Benecke (German, born England, 1817-1894). Dimensions: Image: 17.5 x 21.3 cm (6 7/8 x 8 3/8 in.)Mount: 31.5 x 45.1 cm (12 3/8 x 17 3/4 in.). Date: 1852.This is perhaps the world's first traveler snapshot, made on the deck of a traditional Nile vessel almost forty years before hand-held cameras, shutters, and fast film made the genre a possibility. In 1852, whether for business or simply on a young man's grand tour, Benecke traveled throughout Egypt and the Mediterranean with a camera and a surprisingly humane spirit. The photographers who traveled there shortly before and after him, including Maxime Du Camp, Félix Teynard, and J. B. Greene, focused almost exclusively on the ancient monuments and landscape. Benecke, instead, documented the contemporary world with such keen sensitivity that his photographs, beyond their ethnographic value, present intimate and unaffected portraits of the region's inhabitants. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3657464 [Children from the Village of Kalabshah, Nubia]. Artist: Ernest Benecke (German, born England, 1817-1894). Dimensions: Image: 17 x 21.5 cm (6 11/16 x 8 7/16 in.). Date: 1852.Until the discovery in 1992 of 143 photographs by Ernest Benecke, including this one, only a handful of images by him were known. Born to an Anglo-German family of textile merchants, Benecke managed the family's wool trading operations in Lille, France, and it was no doubt there that he learned to photograph.Whether for business (the firm had a branch in Alexandria) or simply as a young man's grand tour, Benecke traveled throughout Egypt and the Mediterranean in 1852 armed with a camera and a surprisingly humane spirit. Maxime Du Camp and Félix Teynard had photographed there shortly before him and J. B. Greene would soon after, but these photographers focused almost exclusively on the monuments and landscape. Benecke, instead, photographed the villagers he met and did so with such sensitivity and ease that his images, beyond having ethnographic value, are intimate and unaffected portraits. Here, the children of Kalabshah, softly rendered by Benecke's paper negative and salted paper print, seem innocent echoes of their sculpted ancestors carved on the walls of the nearby temple. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3612146 Jérusalem, Enceinte du Temple, Vue générale de la face Est, Pl. 3. Artist: Auguste Salzmann (French, 1824-1872). Dimensions: Image: 22.8 × 33.2 cm (9 in. × 13 1/16 in.)Mount: 44.8 x 58.8 cm (17 5/8 x 23 1/8 in.). Printer: Imprimerie photographique de Blanquart-Évrard, à Lille (French, active 1851-55). Date: 1854.This is one portion of a three-part panorama that forms an all-encompassing view from outside Jerusalem's walls. It displays the city's architectural diversity, including domed mosques and churches, ancient masonry, and towering minarets. Although other photographic views of Jerusalem had been produced by Maxime Du Camp and Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey, Salzmann's project was the most thorough and ambitious to date. Before its integration into the 1856 album, this panorama was offered separately in 1854. A review in the prominent Paris bulletin Annales Archéologiques suggested that the photographs forged a spiritual relationship with the sacred city: "We have here living Jerusalem. An identical panorama should be exposed in all the churches and in all the seminaries, under the eyes of the young people who are destined for the priesthood; there is no description that inspires thoughts more numerous or more profound.".
