The casts containing the petrified corpses of the victims of the eruption in 79 AD in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, Italy (2017) have been passed through a modern CAT scan machine in order gain an insight into the human remains. It will reveal much about the victims: their age, sex, what they ate, what diseases they had and what class of society they belonged to. Computerized axial tomography (CAT) machines, also known as CT scanners, are used because they produce detailed 3D models of the remains. The scans have also revealed that many of the victims at Pompeii suffered severe head injuries perhaps caused by falling rubble as their homes collapsed in the earthquakes that accompanied the eruption.An eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 buried Pompeii under volcanic ash and rock. Pompeii is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Italy.
