Watercolour heightened in white over black pencil on paper (partly with watermark ""...MAN"", presumably paper mill Whatman). 14 x 21cm. Signed lower left: E. Oehme. Framed. Provenance: His excellency privy councillor Prof. Dr. Ludwig Alfred Fiedler (1838-1921), practitioner of the Royal Saxon FamilyPrivy councillor Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Emil Oehme (1847-1921), practitioner of the Royal Saxon FamilyIn Hessian private ownership by way of inheritance Literature:Cf. Ernst Ferdinand Oehme - Ein Landschaftsmaler der Romantik, exhibition catalogue and catalogue raisonné, Dresden, 1997, p. 206 and p. 216 Expert Assesment: Enclosed is an expert assessment by Prof. Dr. Neidhardt, Dresden, dated October 2013 The present watercolour is a version of the recently rediscovered painting ""Mountain Chapel in Winter"" acquired by the Saxon Art Association in 1842. Oehme's depiction of the mountain chapel aroused considerable attention as it was included in the King-Ludwig-Album, which was presented to the Regent at the occasion of the unveiling of the Bavaria statue on the Theresienwiese in Munich on October 9, 1850. Moreover, Carl Fedderle created a wood engraved reproduction and W. Witthöft an etching of the painting which made the motif widely popular. .

Verso: Former inscription on card Provenance: Privy concillor Prof. Dr. Ludwig Alfred Fiedler (1838-1921), practitioner of the Royal Family of Saxony; Privy councillor and medical consultant Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Emil Oehme (1847-1921), practitioner of the Royal Family of Saxony; Hessian private ownership, inheritance Literature: Cf. Boetticher, Friedrich von: Malerwerke des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts, vol. II,1., p. 175: the painting listed under no. 63 with indication of provenance Prof. Ed. Bendemann, Dresden, which was on display at the ""allgemeine und historische Kunstausstellung"" in Munich in 1858; Cf. Neidhardt, Hans Joachim, in Ernst Ferdinand Oehme - Ein Landschaftsmaler der Romantik, exhibition catalogue, Dresden, 1997, p. 103. Expert assessment: By Prof. Dr. Neidhardt, Dresden, dated October 2013 The small oil study of the missing painting ""Triumph der Natur"" (Triumph of Nature) depicts the ramp by the lake of Moritzburg with part of its balustrade and two stoneparforce horn blowers. The main work ""Triumph der Natur"", highly appreciated by critiques at the time, prompted bold interpretations as to the transcience and hideousness of Baroque architecture when presented at the Saxonian Art Association. As a consequence of the great enthusiasm for this work Oehme subsequently produced several replics in oil and watercolour. His main oeuvre dates back to 1845, which means the present study was created shortly before that time. .
