UIS5086070 Telescope used to observe a total solar eclipse, Sobral, Brazil, 1919. Photograph (bromide print) showing the instruments used by the British expedition sent to observe total solar eclipse on 29 May 1919 from Sobral in Brazil. Sir Arthur Eddington at Cambridge University organised the eclipse trip to try and test Einstein's Theory of Relativity. During the event, two heliostats with moveable mirrors were used to direct images of the eclipsed Sun into a pair of horizontal telescopes. Measurement of photographs taken through these instruments was checked for any deflection of star positions adjacent to the Sun. Einstein suggested that the large mass of a star like our Sun would bend the path of any starlight if it passed close-by. ©SSPL/Science Museum

UIS5071316 Satellites, Earth Observation, USA Landsat image of the Araguainha Dome, 1972. The Araguainha Dome in southern Brazil is an example of a feature known as an astrobleme, formed by the impact of a large meteorite. it is around 40 kilometres across and was formed about 244 million years ago. Five Landsats were launched between 1972 and 1984 to study the Earth in various spectral bands from the visible to the infrared with a resolution of about 30 metres. The Landsat programme is an ongoing one. Landsat 7, launched in 1999 is able to view the EarthÕs surface at a resolution of 15 metres, and the next satellite, Landsat 8, is scheduled to be launched into orbit in 2005. The satellites are used to provide information for map making, studies of land use, pollution monitoring and mineral prospecting. ©SSPL/NASA

UIS5091931 Medicines Ciprofloxacin anthrax treatment, 2000. A packet of 14 x 500 mg tablets of Quinoflox (ciprofloxacin) made by Biolab Sanus Farmaceutica Ltd, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and distributed by the internet pharmacy, Pharmacy International Inc. Ciprofloxacin can be used to treat the effects of anthrax inhalation. Anthrax is a naturally occuring disease of plant eating animals, and is caused by a bacteria called Bacillus anthracis. The spores can be stored almost indefinitely as a dry powder, which is easily inhaled. Since September 1991, there has been concern that terrorists might use anthrax as a biological weapon. In late 2001 letters containing anthrax spores, addressed to various American politicians and media figures, were sent through the mail, killing five people. ©SSPL/Science Museum
