Having likely been involved in a drunken brawl, the man serves a public sentence, a form of corporal punishment used in 19th-century Britain for minor civil disturbances. Beside the stocks stands a tall pillory post equipped with iron rings to restrain the arms of a prisoner. The work was published by G. S. Tregear in London as part of the satirical series "Tregear's Flights of Humour". 1834.

3FM992H An engraving depicting Saint Philip Howard, 13th Earl of Arundel (1557–1595), an English nobleman who was canonised as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. A prominent courtier during the Tudor (1485–1603) era, Howard fell into disfavour with Queen Elizabeth I following his public profession of Roman Catholicism in 1584. After an unsuccessful attempt to flee the country, he was captured and spent the final ten years of his life imprisoned in the Tower of London, where he eventually died of dysentery. This print was based on an original portrait by the Italian artist Federigo Zuccaro.

Appointed Deputy to the Führer (Stellvertreter des Führers) in 1933, Hess held that position until 1941, when he flew solo to Scotland in an attempt to negotiate the United Kingdom's exit from the Second World War. He was taken prisoner and eventually convicted of crimes against peace. He was still serving his life sentence and 93 years old at the time of his suicide in 1987. c.1923.
