902_05_12513297highres The Sheldonian Theatre, located in Oxford, England, was built from 1664 to 1669 after a design by Christopher Wren for the University of Oxford. The building is named after Gilbert Sheldon, chancellor of the University at the time and the project's main financial backer. It is used for music concerts, lectures and University ceremonies, but not for drama until 2015 when the Christ Church Dramatic Society staged a production of The Crucible. There are thirteen square pillars topped by head-and-shoulder busts marking the front boundary of the Sheldonian and erected when it was built in 1662-8. When the Old Ashmolean (now the Museum of the History of Science) was built next door in 1679-83, another four matching heads were carved to go in front of that; Oxford, England

North Bay Flamborough Head , Fishing was first recorded in the 13th century, when about nine boats fished the seas off the Head. By the 1890s, some eighty 'cobles' were registered. George Washington Wilson (7 February 1823 - 9 March 1893) [1] was a pioneering Scottish photographer. From about 1870 onwards Wilson relied increasingly on others to add to his stock.[6] Thus all of the Mediterranean views and many of the English and Scottish series are the work of staff photographers, or were commissioned by the company from photographic firms elsewhere in the UK; and the Australian and South African images were added to the firm's stock in the 1890s by Charles Wilson (GWW's son) and staff photographers such as Fred Hardie.[7]

A postcard of Queenstown, New Zealand by famous photographer Frederick George Radcliffe (F.G.R Postcards) The notable British born photographer, Frederick George Radcliffe is widely recognised in New Zealand as one of the pre-eminent photographers of his time. Radcliffe traveled the length and breadth of this country recording clear, detailed pictorial images of rural and urban New Zealand scenes. Much of his subject matter consisted of aesthetically pleasing views of parks and gardens, municipal buildings, churches and all manor of community infrastructure. Curiously, with the exception of an array of maori subjects a great many of his images were completely devoid of the presence of people.

Donald Marsh raised his arm and shouted over the howl that was beginning to rise from the wild beast in the mob? Stop! You've killed a woman ! The announcement partly sobered the crowdIs it true ?' Henry Maxwell asked it, as Dr. Wert kneeled on the other side of Loreen, supporting her. She's dying, said Dr. West, briefly. Loreen opened her eyes and smiled at Virginia. Virginia wiped the blood from her face, and then bent over and kissed her. Loreen smiled again, and the next moment her soul was in Paradise.

902_05_12511007highres Magic lantern slide . War images . Battle ship HMS Hood. HMS Hood (pennant number 51) was the last battlecruiser built for the Royal Navy. Commissioned in 1920, she was named after the 18th-century Admiral Samuel Hood. One of four Admiral-class battlecruisers ordered in mid-1916, Hood had design limitations, though her design was revised after the Battle of Jutland and improved while she was under construction. For this reason she was the only ship of her class to be completed. Despite the appearance of new and more modern ship designs over time, Hood remained the largest and most powerful warship in the world for twenty years after her commissioning and her prestige was reflected in her nickname 'The Mighty Hood'.

Dazzle camouflage, also known as razzle dazzle (in the U.S.) or dazzle painting, was a family of ship camouflage used extensively in World War I, and to a lesser extent in World War II and afterwards. Credited to the British marine artist Norman Wilkinson, though with a rejected prior claim by the zoologist John Graham Kerr, it consisted of complex patterns of geometric shapes in contrasting colours, interrupting and intersecting each other. Unlike other forms of camouflage, the intention of dazzle is not to conceal but to make it difficult to estimate a target's range, speed, and heading. Norman Wilkinson explained in 1919 that he had intended dazzle primarily to mislead the enemy about a ship's course and so to take up a poor firing position.[a]

Admiral of the Fleet John Rushworth Jellicoe, 1st Earl Jellicoe, GCB, OM, GCVO, SGM, DL (5 December 1859 - 20 November 1935) was a Royal Navy officer. He fought in the Anglo-Egyptian War and the Boxer Rebellion and commanded the Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland in May 1916 during the First World War. His handling of the fleet at that battle was controversial. Jellicoe made no serious mistakes and the German High Seas Fleet retreated to port, at a time when defeat would have been catastrophic for Britain. But the British public was disappointed that the Royal Navy had not won a victory on the scale of the Battle of Trafalgar. Jellicoe later served as First Sea Lord, overseeing the expansion of the Naval Staff at the Admiralty and the introduction of convoys, but was relieved at the end of 1917. He also served as the Governor-General of New Zealand in the early 1920s.
