Kerry, Ring of Kerry, Waterville: memorial stone plaque at bronze statue of silent movie star Charlie Chaplin (Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin jr., KBE, 1889 - 1977) as "The Tramp" by sculptor Alan Ryan Hall, unveiled July 1998. Charlie Chaplin used to make annual holidays in small coastal village of Waterville, from 1959 to 1970. In 1970, he stopped, because being anxious of the Troubles in Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. Chaplin, born in London and of English origin, came regularly with his wife Oona and their eight children and stayed in Butlers Arms Hotel, in Waterville. The statue was sponsored by Chaplin`s daughter, actress Geraldine Chaplin (born 1944 and also guest in Waterville) and EU Leader programme. The family of her mother and wife of Charlie, Oona O`Neill, was of Irish origin and Oona wanted to learn more about Ireland. Superstar Charlie Chaplin enjoyed angling in nearby Lough Currane and walks along the shories around Waterville. A plaque near the statue presents Chaplin as "a welcome and humble guest and friend of many" in Ireland. The statue shows him in his most prestigious role, marked by his first film success "The Tramp", also known as "The Little Tramp", in 1915. Alan Ryan Hall (born 1944) is a british sculptor living and working in Ireland near Waterville in Knightstown on Valentia Island. In 2011, Waterville presented the first Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival. This annual Comedy film festival is held in August.
