Date: 1862.Gaining control of the Mississippi River and Confederate trade were key Union goals from the start of the Civil War, and led President Abraham Lincoln to declare a blockade of Southern ports in April 1861. This print records a Northern assault, in April 1862, on two forts guarding the mouth of the Mississippi. Six days of mortar bombardment, followed by fierce naval combat, forced Forts Jackson and Saint Philip to capitulate. Union Flag Officer David Farragut then moved his fleet upriver to take New Orleans, the Confederacy's largest city and chief port. Several months later the New York firm of Currier & Ives produced this dramatic lithograph printed, using multiple stones to print a lavish multicolor image whose panoramic composition relies upon elements associated with the Sublime. The text below identifies the participants and underscores the expansive mood, declaring, "The sight of this night attack was awfully grand, the river lit up with blazing rafts filled with pine knots and the ships seemed to be fighting literally amidst the flames and smoke.". alb3605876 Classical Female Figure (Diana or Venus) with Two Infants. Artist: Francesco Primaticcio (Italian, Bologna 1504/5-1570 Paris). Dimensions: sheet: 9 15/16 x 7 15/16 in. (25.2 x 20.1 cm). Date: ca. 1539-42.The Italian artist Primaticcio went to France early in his career to work for the French king, Francis I. Although most of Primaticcio's energies went into decorating the great palace of Fontainebleau, the present drawing was probably executed for Anet, the château built for Henry II's mistress, Diane de Poitiers (1499-1566). The main figure in the drawing may be Diana: although she lacks her attribute of the crescent crown on her head, she points at the crescent moon at upper left. Diane de Poitiers, was frequently alluded to through the portrayals of Diana, goddess of the hunt, and her attributes. Alternatively, the subject of the drawing was tentatively identified as Venus with Eros and Anteros, when published in 1986Three other drawings by Primaticcio relating to his work at Anet survive; they are the same size and are executed in the same delicate manner with light brown ink and wash. Like this drawing, they illustrate scenes from the story of the mythological goddess Diana, and it has been suggested that they were for a series of stained-glass windows. The emphasis on outline and the bold, simple design corroborate this idea. The sheet is annotated by a well-known early collector in pen and dark brown ink at lower left: "228."; and on verso at center: "cxlij" terminating in a paraph. Hitherto unnoticed, the paper contains a watermark, cropped down the middle by the left border, depicting a stylized bunch of grapes (closest to Briquet 13073). It is typical of paper manufactured in Lyons, ca. 1565; more naturalistic variants of this type of watermark date to the late 15th century. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: 1784.One of the most significant commissions of the eighteenth century was the Parnassus painted by Mengs in 1761 for the Villa Albani, Rome, and hailed as a manifesto of the new style of Neoclassicism. The carefully differentiated Muses, accompanied by their mother, Mnemosyne, derive from ancient sculpture, while the setting, a small grove of laurels in which the Muses are grouped around their leader, harks back to Raphael's fresco in the Vatican.Morghen was one of the most admired of the technically accomplished printmakers whose reproductions of famous paintings were enormously prized at the end of the eighteenth century. alb3606402 Terracotta statue of a young woman. Culture: Etruscan. Dimensions: H. 29 7/16 in. (74.8 cm). Date: late 4th-early 3rd century B.C..The legendary king Aeneas, father of the Latin race, fled from Troy to Macedonia, then Sicily, and finally to the Italian peninsula. There he founded a city called Lavinium (modern Pratica di Mare), a site eighteen miles south of Rome, which became a major religious center for the Latin people. The distinctive clothing and jewelry on this life-sized statue closely resemble those on fourth and third century B.C. terracottas found there. The elaborate necklaces and armband appear to be reproduced from molds of actual jewelry. Some of the pendants are decorated with reliefs depicting various Etruscan deities and heroes. Originally, this woman wore a pair of grape-cluster earrings. The one on her left ear is visible behind her long hair. When complete, the statue probably stood in a sanctuary and showed the young woman holding an incense box in her extended right hand. This rare statue is an exceptional example of the awakening sophistication of Italic artists, who over the following two centuries fused native traditions with imported ones and gave birth to the multifaceted art of Late Republican Rome.
