alb3666932 Evening Snow on the Heater. Artist: Suzuki Harunobu (Japanese, 1725-1770). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: 11 1/8 x 8 1/8 in. (28.3 x 20.6 cm)medium-size print (chu-ban). Date: late 18th century. The interior scene in this print is fortified by double windows, both a series of bars and shoji sliding panels. The windows, however, are open. One woman, seated and holding a pipe, seems to expect that she will be seen by a man through the gaps and will be able to arrange an assignation. The other woman is making wadding by stretching sheets of floss silk over the lacquered dome-shaped heaters known as nurioke. Floss silk draped over a nurioke represents the "evening snow" in this print, one of the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, which originated in China and became popular in Japan. The karazuri embossing technique outlines the shape of the floss silk, emphasizing its softness. This print is not a first edition: Slight variations in color and patterns on the walls were added, and the seal of the commissioner, Kyosen, was omitted for the commercial product. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3679657 Attendant Bodhisattva. Culture: China. Dimensions: H. 59 in. (149.9 cm). Date: 10th-11th century. This sculpture of an attendant bodhisattva was most likely part of a colossal triptych showing a Buddha flanked by two such figures. It is made of willow, a material that was often used in the north for the construction of Buddhist sculpture, and was once brightly painted. The body's sense of volume, the careful rendering of the braids that fall along the shoulders, and the scarf tied at the chest are typical features of Buddhist statuary dating from the tenth and eleventh centuries. Date: 11th-12th century. This small statue of a seated courtier is a classic example of a Shinto deity (kami) represented in human form. The artist constructed it through the ichiboku-zukuri method, which uses one piece of wood for an entire sculpture. Despite the insect damage throughout (common in Shinto statues from this period), the exposed wood grain--symmetrically centered on the face--gives the work a dramatic effect and strong presence.
