Sampler, Eliza Ann Hunt, American, American, 1815 - 1845, Medium: silk embroidery, linen foundation Technique: embroidered in cross, satin, knot, split, and stem stitches on plain weave foundation, A square sampler worked in black, brown, purple, green, beige and pink on a natural ground. At the top four alphabets are worked in black. At the bottom are a house, trees and flowers, and a mourning plaque beneath a willow tree. In the center, three interlocking hearts indicate that the embroiderer's father had had two wives, both of whom were now dead.
