alb3625654 David with His Foot in a Noose in an Initial O. Artist: Domenico Morone (Italian, Verona ca. 1442-ca. 1518 Verona). Dimensions: 7 3/8 x 6 1/8 in. (18.7 x 15.5cm)Initial Ground: 6 1/4 x 6 3/16 in. (15.8 x 15.7cm). Date: ca. 1500.Initial O introducing the Introit (opening chant) to the Mass for the third Sunday of Lent, Psalm 24:15: Oculi mei semper ad Dominumquia ipse ellevet de laqueopedesmeos, "My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for he shall pluck my feet out of the snare."This vibrantly colored initial portrays David holding the end of a noose around his foot while looking toward heaven to the hand of God. It is among a small group of miniatures by the Veronese painter Domenico Morone and belonged to an unidentified choir book known as a gradual that was likely made for a Franciscan monastery, perhaps San Bernardino di Verona. Domenico is known primarily for his panel paintings and large-scale frescoes for churches in the Veneto. His hard, linear style, sculpturesque figures, plastic manner of rendering drapery, and rocky landscape reveal the influence of the Paduan master Andrea Mantegna. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3655561 Madonna and Child with Saints. Artist: Girolamo dai Libri (Italian, Verona 1474-1555 Verona). Dimensions: Arched top, 157 x 81 1/2 in. (398.8 x 207 cm). Date: ca. 1520.The saints (left to right) are Catherine of Alexandria, Leonard, Augustine, and Apollonia.Painted in about 1520 for the Augustinian church of San Leonardo nel Monte outside Verona, the picture was described at length by the sixteenth-century biographer Giorgio Vasari, who especially admired the landscape and enormous laurel tree. While the Madonna and Child reflect the work of Andrea Mantegna, the distant hill crowned with a fortress and the dead tree are taken over directly from Dürer's well-known engraving of Saint Eustace. The juxtaposition of the dead tree with the flourishing laurel refers to Death and Resurrection, while the peacock is a traditional symbol of immortality.A versatile artist, Girolamo dai Libri was equally famous as an illuminator of books, whence his name dai Libri ("of the books"). Of modern manufacture, the frame is based on Renaissance prototypes. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Girolamo dai Libri.

akg1557571 Andrea MANTEGNA:. In 204 BC the Romans brought the cult of Cybele, the eastern goddess of victory, from Pessina, Asia Minor, to Rome. Mantegna has combined the accounts of Ovid, Livy and Appian. Cybele is represented by her sacred stone - 'she fell to earth as a meteor' - and as a bust with a mural crown (associating her with a city state). According to Juvenal, Cornelius Scipio (probably in profile gesturing with his right hand) was the most worthy Roman citizen to receive Cybele. This is one of four pictures commissioned in 1505 by Francesco Cornaro a Venetian nobleman, who claimed descent from the ancient Cornelii family (prominent in the picture). Mantegna only completed one before his death and Bellini supplied another (Washington, National Gallery). Glue on linen, 73.7 × 268 cm, 1505-6. London, National Gallery. Date: ca. 1465.The Vivarini were a family of Venetian painters whose prolific workshop specialized in large multi-tiered altarpieces for churches throughout the Veneto region. This relatively small triptych was likely intended for private devotion. The kneeling nun, dressed as a member of the Dominican Order, probably represents the patron. Bartolomeo's debt to the Paduan master Andrea Mantegna is especially evident in the rendering of the landscape and the figure of the Madonna in the Nativity scene. Although the frame is not original, it conveys the decorative ornamentation typical of the Vivarini. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
