2T8ACGH This bust-length portrait of Honoré Willsie Morrow demonstrates how Käsebier brought an artistic attitude to even straightforward commercial portrait commissions. Morrow (1880–1940) was a successful author of fiction and nonfiction and a magazine editor. Käsebier’s portrait, while appropriately demure, nonetheless conveys the sitter’s intelligence, energy, and directness, enlivening a formulaic composition through pose, framing, and highlighting. Portrait of Honoré Willsie Morrow, c. 1917. Gertrude Käsebier (American, 1852–1934). Platinum print; image: 12.6 x 9.5 cm (4 15/16 x 3 3/4 in.); pape

2T8ACF0 Italy provides insight into Käsebier’s earliest artistic productions. The woman’s pose and central placement emphasize the picture’s formalism and careful construction. Her rigid vertical posture echoes the trees in the background. Soft focus, a device borrowed from Pictorialist photography, frustrates a clear view of her features, suggesting that the image is neither portrait nor snapshot but a symbolic statement about womanhood and its association with nature. Italy, c. 1889. Gertrude Käsebier (American, 1852–1934). Platinum print mounted to Japanese paper; image: 18.6 x 12 cm (7 5/16 x 4 3/

2HH7J1M A Sioux Chief [Has-No-Horses] 1898 Joseph T. Keiley American Keiley’s association with Stieglitz began about 1898, the year he and Gertrude Käsebier photographed a group of Lakota Sioux—including this man, Has-No-Horses—who were in New York as part of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. Keiley, a dedicated amateur, collaborated with Stieglitz to improve upon a glycerine-developed platinum printing process that proved to be among the most painterly photographic methods ever devised. This sort of manipulation made each print unique and emphasized the handmade, artistic nature of such photographs in c

Gertrude Kasebier’s soft-focus technique, representative of the Pictorialist style of art photography at the turn of the twentieth century, helps to make this tender portrait of domesticity and motherhood—the artist’s favorite themes—a moving
