2F31PAR The caption for this 1902 image reads: The Country Boy at the District School. It complemented the chapter Fun Out of school in the memoir Being a Boy by Charles Dudley Warner. 'Being A Boy' (published 1878) is Warner's profound and entertaining memoir of his childhood spent growing up on a Massachusetts farm. Warner (1829 -1900) was an American novelist and essayist. He was a close friend of Mark Twain, and co-authored 'The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today' with him.

2RFD1B1 This is a colourised image of Mark Twain, the American writer, publisher and lecturer. The original was taken 20th May 1907. His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Referred to as the father of American Literature, he is most remembered for his novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Born shortly after an appearance of Haileys Comet, he always claimed that he would out with. He died of a heart attack the day after the Comet passed close to the earth. Copyright by A.F.
