Descrição:	Grain weevil. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of a grain weevil Sitophilus granarius on a plant stem. This beetle infests and damages stored grain. The head is at upper right with a compound eye seen. There is an elongated snout, called a rostrum, which has blade-like mandibles at its tip. The rostrum bores through the fibrous coat of a wheat grain and the mandibles chew and crush the kernel. Female weevils insert their eggs in cavities dug in the kernel, ensuring a food supply for the larvae. Fumigants are used on the weevil if stored grain infestations occur. Magnification: x9 at 6x7cm size.
