These lesions have become secondarily infected by bacteria, causing inflammation. Genital herpes is a relatively common sexually transmitted disease (STD). The infection causes clusters of small, contagious blisters to appear in the affected area. These burst, leaving small ulcers which may take up to three weeks to heal. During this time, headaches and fevers are common. There is no cure for the viral infection, which commonly recurs, but secondary infections can be treated with antibiotics.
