| Descrição: | Arterial ulcer(centre, black, white-ringed) on a 66-year-old male patient's ankle. Skin ulcers are infected open skin sores. This ulcer is a symptom of peripheral vascular disease (PVD), also indicated by the poor condition of the patient's veins (blue lines). PVD symptoms result from inadequate blood flow through the blood vessels of peripheral limbs (usually the leg). The reduced blood flow can be caused by a thrombosis (blood clot), or a narrowing or inflammation of the blood vessels. Severe cases can lead to gangrene. This patient is a tobacco smoker, which is one of the risk factors for PVD. Treatments include exercise, giving up smoking and blood vessel surgery. |
