Eczema is a superficial skin inflammation (dermatitis) characterised by an itchy rash and small blisters that may weep and become crusted. Scaling, thickening and discolouration of the skin may also occur. Excessive scratching can lead to infection. Eczema can occur for a variety of reasons and sometimes has no apparent cause. Eczema on the eyelid may be associated with an allergic reaction to cosmetic products. Treatment includes avoiding any known cause and the use of soothing ointments.
