| Descrição: | Cracked nipple. Thrush (candidiasis) causing cracking of the nipple of a 30 year old breastfeeding woman. Thrush is an infection caused by the fungus Candida albicans. C. albicans is commonly found on the skin and the mucous membranes of the mouth, digestive and respiratory tracts and the vagina. It is normally harmless, but the use of antibiotics or a suppressed immune system can lead to infection. Treatment is with anti-fungal drugs. |
