Descrição:	Portrait of Hideki Yukawa (1907-81), Japanese physicist and Nobel Laureate. Yukawa graduated from Kyoto in 1929, gaining his PhD at Osaka in 1938. Yukawa spent his life studying the nuclei of atoms. In 1935 he published a paper, showing that a special strong force was responsible for keeping the nucleus together against the electromagnetic repulsion of its constituent protons. The strong nuclear force earned Yukawa the 1949 Nobel Prize for Physics, the first Japanese Nobel winner. His theories were proved experimentally with the discovery by Powell of the pi-meson, the 'carrier' of this force. After a spell in the USA from 1948- 53, Yukawa returned to Kyoto University.
