| Descrição: | Nicholas Saunderson (1682-1739), English mathematician. Blinded by smallpox at about a year old, Saunderson overcame his disability to study mathematics at Cambridge University. In 1711, he became the fourth Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1718. Saunderson is here depicted holding an armillary sphere, a device used to show the motion of the stars around the Earth. |
