| Descrição: | Marie Curie. Polish-French physicist Marie Curie (1867-1934) as a young woman. Curie was born into a very poor family in Russian-dominated Poland. Determined to gain an education she moved to Paris in 1891 to study physics and graduated with an order of merit. She began studying radioactivity in uranium shortly after its discovery by Bequerel and after marrying her co-worker Pierre. Their work led to the discovery of two new elements (polonium and radium) and won them the Nobel Prize for physics in 1903. Marie also won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1911, five years after Pierre's death in a road accident. She died of leukaemia caused by overexposure to radioactivity. |
