| Descrição: | Landfill gas flare. Landfill sites contain organic matter that decays and produces methane gas. This can build up to dangerous levels and cause massive explosions unless burnt off in this way. Methane is 20 times more effective than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas, so burning the methane reduces the impact on the environment. Flaring is usually a temporary measure. When a sufficient flow of gas is produced it can be used to generate electricity in a power station. Photographed at a landfill in St Helens, Merseyside, UK. |
