| Descrição: | Kimberlite rock. Polarised light micrograph of a section through kimberlite, an igneous rock. It contains the mineral olivine. Olivine is recognised here by its irregular shaped crystals, with randomly oriented fractures. Kimberlite is primarily mined in Kimberley, South Africa, after which it was named, but is also found in Russia and USA. It is the parental rock of diamond and an important source of clear pyrope crystals (Cape ruby), which are used in jewellery. |
