The rash can appear as raised bumps or patches, and may look pink or red on fair skin, but can be harder to see on darker skin tones. Hives can affect about 20 percent of people at some point in their lives and can be triggered by various substances or situations including certain foods, medications, insect bites, heat, cold, chemicals, allergies, as well as viral or bacterial infections. Treatment options include avoiding known triggers, taking oral antihistamines, and applying hydrocortisone cream.
