Título: | Mycosis fungoides on a woman's back |
Descrição: | Mycosis fungoides (stage 2) on the back of a 32 year old female patient. Mycosis fungoides is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which is a cancer of the lymphatic system. It specifically affects the skin and is considered a form of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL).This is a group of conditions where white blood cells called T-cells, which aid the immune system in fighting infections, develop abnormalities that cause them to attack the skin. The disease often presents with skin rashes, patches, plaques, and tumours which can be confused with other skin conditions initially, making diagnosis challenging. The exact cause of mycosis fungoides is unknown. It typically affects people over 50 years old but those who have it can expect to live a normal lifespan. While there is no cure for mycosis fungoides and its cause is still unknown, treatments such as steroid creams, ointments and phototherapy can help clear the rashes for a period of time. This case is classed at Stage 2 where the patches or thin plaques cover between 10 percent and 50 percent of the body surface. For further images of this patient see SPL codes C059/1834 and C059/1833. |
