Panthera atrox also known as the North American lion, American lion or American cave lion was one of the largest true cats of all time. Panthera atrox emerged as quite distinct from lion, tiger, and jaguar. Smilodon fatalis was the sabre-tooth cat (popularly known as the sabre-tooth tiger). It was a bit smaller than a modern-day lion, but much heavier. Smilodon had very strong jaw and neck muscles that let it stab prey with its deadly maxillary canine sabre teeth.
