| Descrição: | The mineral Grossular is a calcium-aluminium silicate, chemical formula Ca3Al2 (SiO4)3 and it belongs to the garnet group of minerals. Its crystal system is cubic, and well developed crystals often form dodecahedrons. Colours range from light to dark green, yellow to reddish brown and translucent to opaque, such as seen in this sample. Grossular usually forms in contact metamorphic rocks. Grossular forms a solid solution series with Andradite, a garnet mineral in which the aluminium is replaced by iron, and can be virtually indistinguishable from it in localities where they occur together. Provenance is Friedeberg in the Czech Republic. Full width of image frame is 125 mm. |
