Descrição:	Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom (1819-1901), in a portrait dating from 1838. Born Alexandrina Victoria, she became queen at the age of 18 in 1837. She reigned for over 63 years until her death, and is the second-longest reigning British monarch. During her reign, the United Kingdom went through a period of industrial, cultural, political, scientific and military change, including a much-expanded British Empire. Queen Victoria became Empress of India in 1876. This portrait by US artist Thomas Sully was commissioned by The Society of the Sons of St George, a charitable institution in Philadelphia, USA, and dates from shortly after the Queen's accession to the throne when Sully was visiting his native England. The Queen sat at Buckingham House (Buckingham Palace) for Sully throughout March, April and May of 1838.
