Pauta: | Petrus Gonsalvus, 16th-century example of hypertrichosis |
Título: | Petrus Gonsalvus, 16th-century example of hypertrichosis |
Descrição: | Petrus Gonsalvus, 16th-century example of hypertrichosis. Born in around 1537, Gonsalvus was famous in his lifetime for his condition of hypertrichosis (excessive bodily hair growth). He is shown here in the clothes of a Renaissance nobleman (from the court of Parma) with his wife Catherine. Four of their children also exhibited hypertrichosis (two shown in C047/5758). This illustration dates from around 1575 and was published in 'Animalia Rationalia et Insecta', a set of miniatures of animals by Flemish painter Joris Hoefnagel. The biblical quote across bottom is from Job 14 and translates as: 'Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.' |
