| Descrição: | The Death of Socrates, 19th-century engraving. This engraving is a copy of 'The Death of Socrates' (1787) by the French artist Jacques-Louis David. This famous scene, described in the writings of Plato (at foot of bed), shows the Ancient Greek philosopher Socrates (c.470-399 BC, centre) still teaching his students in prison as he reaches for a cup of hemlock (a poison) with which to commit suicide. This scene followed his conviction for corrupting the youth of Athens with his teachings. His friend Crito is holding his leg. In the background, his wife is seen leaving the prison. This engraving dates from 1866. |
