| Descrição: | Rene-Just Hauy (1743-1822). 1835 illustration of the French mineralogist and founder of crystallography Rene-Just Hauy. Hauy, an ordained Priest, became interested in crystallography in 1781 after noticing the straight lines and constant angles of shattered calcite fragments. He went on to show that crystals were built up of tiny units, whose shape determined the shape of the crystal. In 1802 Hauy became professor of mineralogy at the French National Museum of Natural History. Engraving from Les Savants Modernes (1899). |
