Close-up of the underside of the eyelid of the left eye of a patient with trachoma, a chronic, contagious eye disease that is caused by the virus-like bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. The eye's membrane, the conjunctiva, becomes infected and inflamed. Infection is spread through poor hygiene or flies. Repeated infection may lead to conjunctival scarring and dry eyes. Subsequent conjunctival shrinkage causes the eyelids to turn inwards and scratch the cornea, resulting in a loss of sight. This patient has characteristic diagnostic signs, known as Herbert's pits and Arlt's line. |
