Descrição:	Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England. This artwork is based on a medallion made by Thomas Simon (c.1623-1665), with faint details of a battle in the background. The phrase across top ('Lord of Hosts') was the battle cry (hence 'Word at Dunbar' at left) used at the Battle of Dunbar (3 September 1650, date at right) where Cromwell's forces defeated a Scottish army loyal to King Charles II. This was part of the Third English Civil War. by this time, Charles I had been executed (as described in the text at bottom) and Cromwell would eventually dissolve the Rump Parliament and establish himself as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England. The artwork is by antiquarian Charles Townley (1737-1805). Artwork from 'Antiquarian Repertory' (1807).
