Descrição:	Eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Cutaway artwork showing the internal magma vents and chambers inside the erupting volcano Mount Vesuvius. This stratovolcano (1277 metres) is on the coastline of the Gulf of Naples (left) in Italy. It has erupted numerous times, the most famous being the eruption of 79 AD that destroyed the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Steam and volcanic gases are rising from vents, ash and lava bombs are erupting from the summit, and rivers of lava and pyroclastic flows (glowing avalanches) are flowing down the slopes of the volcano.
