Mosquito eggs are laid in water and after hatching, the larvae feed on microorganisms, breathe air and moult several times. They then pupate and emerge in adult form. The female Anopheles mosquito is a known vector for the tropical disease malaria. Malaria is caused by protozoan parasites which are transmitted by the bite of the female mosquito when she sucks blood. The protozoan malaria parasites passed into the bloodstream of the host cause periodic fevers and can kill. Malaria affects millions of people in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Magnification: x15 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
