Above ground, erosion of mountains carries sediment along rivers to the sea, forming sedimentary rocks. The nine basic stages are: magma; rock crystallization; igneous rocks; erosion; sedimentation; sedimentary rocks; tectonic burial and metamorphism; metamorphic rocks; and melting.
